We went up to Auburn State Recreation Area to do a wee bit of panning.
Came up with nuttin. :occasion18:

However, as I was classifying so called pay dirt :laughing7:, I spotted this neat little rock. The reason I picked it out is because I liked the greenish hue of the stone and thought it was pretty.

Anyway, tucked it away in my pocket. Brought it home and here are the pictures.

What kind of mineral is it?

Thanks for lookin'

Close up using my 8x loupe. I placed the rock on a guitar pick for size comparison. Interestingly, it gives it a weird kind of perspective I should of used a dime.

On a whim, I brought the rock into a dark room and fluoresced it. To my surprise, it turns purple.

Not sure.....I have found some pretty impressive specimens of it.Its a "Green",intrusion into quartz crystal.Seems somebody said it is florite(?)

I would say opaline crystal...low grade..an intrusion as kugar said...common in that part of country....solid specimens have value... opaline.jpg

The opals that I've seen online fluoresce green. Does that mean this is a different type of opal since it fluoresces purple?

opaline is not an opal...a mineral.it is also possible that it is olivene, another mineral...olivine.jpg
