Probably IS true.

Unfortunately, students today do not have that inspiration we had growing up . . . PARENTS.

Everyone wants to be their kids' FRIEND (yeah, I know it's in the article, but it's true) and not take the responsibility to TEACH and MOTIVATE. For instance, a firm whack on the backside with a leather strap known as a belt . . . done so as to induce pain . . . can be and is an EXCELLENT motivator. Even more so, the promise to REPEAT the process if the child does not obey, will usually prevent one from having to administer it again in the near future.

That being said, being a PARENT does require being consistent. As a wise man once warned: "And you fathers, do not be irritating your children." Inconsistent discipline is irritating to children. They need to have boundaries and know those boundaries. I Janie is supposed to be back from her date at 10 PM but doesn't make it until 4:30, the correct application of a belt with enough force to leave welts but not do permanent damage should be sufficient to convince her that 10 PM is more likely to mean 10 PM than 10:01 PM.

If you let Janie get away with it one time, then the next time she'll resent the punishment even more than if she had received it consistently. Such consistent discipline will "motivate" her to end her date on time so that she can be HOME on time.

It also works to improve grades, improve study habits, as well as improving manners. On the other hand, a good bar of Ivory soap can help expand your child's vocabulary so that they don't have to resort to words that only have four letters. Just keep a small amount (about a handful) grated in plastic bag. When the bad words come out, soap and a toothbrush go in. Practiced consistently, their vocabulary can improve overnight without the use of expensive therapists etc.

As the old Alka Seltzer commercial used to go: " Try it, You'll LIKE IT!"
