While searching one house, I'm offered several more!

Sometimes I fret about running out of good places to search, but now I'm starting to stockpile a few. Yesterday, while working a yard in town, the owner's wife came out and offered her mother's place out in the country, adjacent to an old farm house. The only request she had was that I search for her brother's high school ring and her mother's gold bracelet. Anything else I found was mine to keep. Deal! The second house is next door to the one I'm currently searching; the owner came by and I merely asked him to clarify the border between the two properties. He said it didn't matter, that I could search anywhere, including the rest of the yard around his house. He watched me work for a while and was impressed that my XLT was able to find coins and other stuff. The man is 85 and seemed eager to offer up lots of information about the old days (which I am always eager to hear). The third house I've been offered is two doors the other way, brother to the one I am currently working. This is a corner lot and the oldest house in that stretch; to me, it has the most potential. I also gave back the SLQ I found in a mistaken search last week and told the owner, "If you're curious about what else might be back there, give me a call." He said he would; this gives me about half a block of houses in an old neighborhood only a block from where I live. Does it get any easier than that, especially with the price of gas?

PS After finishing yesterday, I noticed two MDers in the park across the street, probably pulling clad. I didn't have time to stop and ask how they were doing.

Thats the way it works.

At the start is hard to find land & then land finds you.

I have more than enough for me & an army for the rest of my life. But wouldn't say no to more ;D

That really is the way it works.

I recently asked permission at a local house built in the late 1800's. The woman said OK and that I might have some luck in the empty lot next door where another house burned down in the 50's. Then her daughter arrived. She's part of the local historical society and has more places for me.

Now I have more permission than I have time to hunt. Not a bad situation... ;D

Gee Whiz! I've asked and asked about old houses around here and I either don't get any answer at all or I'm told NO! Maybe I should change deordants! ??? I hope you find some really neat stuff at those old places including old coins. WTG

Yep, it's all about networking. Friends, friends of friends, family, friends of family, etc. When people realize that you are not in it for the $$ but it is a hobby and you value the historical significance of the items found they are much more likely to offer their property.

So, you taking the week off of work to hunt these places? ;)

the ":word" got around about what a "honest" man you are---the woman who will let you search her property (if you find the high school ring / moms bracelet please return them) most likely wouldn't let you hunt it unless you were "trustworthy" for fear you would just "pocket" the items--the word that your are a straight up type guy is why you got it most likely===honesty does pay-- both in being able to sleep well at night and in the way folks treat you. congratulations halfdime looks like you plate is gonna be full for a long time.

Keep on trying Mumszie. I am having the same string of NO's to deal with but I'm sure once I have the chain going and get to know people (and vise-versa) that more and more opportunities will open up. best of luck to you.

Re: While searching one house, I'm offered several more!

sometimes getting that first house--ie as a sellsman calls it "the foot in the door" ---the first one in a area--is the hardest part--- things and folks tend to "link up" for better or worse---good word or bad you get known.---find that first house be good and right maybe cut the owner in for "half" --- if you find a couple of nice "silver" coins make sure he gets one and then sit back and let his mouth do the rest for you---works like a charm.--- to open up places to hunt---just about everyone has freinds and family and folks love to chatter--- ;D Ivan
