While hiking in whats the best way to.........

I do indeed break mine down, but I don't put in IN my pack. It goes nicely on the back of it and doesn't require me to open my pack. I have been backpacking for a long time and one thing I do NOT like to do is unpack it for any short duration. Seems like I can never get everything back in the darn thing. My pack has a nice setup on the back to lace thing into, and parachute cord is my choice of material with which to tie things.

If you're talking just for the day, you can buy "just a replacement frame" for a frame style backpack. This is what I use, a few bungy cords and clips and you can carry everything you need, even a small daypack.

Yes thats sounds good. Being a former military guy I have all the packs and mole carrying equipment. I even have my molle vest. I think that or my pack will work along with tying it up with (you guess it) Rnager cord/parachute cord.

sounds like your on the heels of a new hunting spot! dont forget to fill us in on the details! ;)

I have a pack just for my detector (broken down) and few digging tools. I do that so I dont give away my hunting spots. Cause if you saw somebody walking with a detector in plain sight wouldn't watch to see where they go?? I know I would, unless your hiking 20 miles then you can have that hunting spot... Anyways I break mine down into a pack.. -JC

I am almost always keeping it swinging.

Me too. I've found some interesting stuff dropped by hikers and hunters. By mid summer, though, the undergrowth can get too tangly. Thats when I just reverse it and carry it handle-forward in my left hand.

Don't want my arms to grow different lengths from always swinging it with my right. ;)

Depends.. A walk in the park, I break down into an aviators helmet bag. Long hikes in raggity areas broken down into a used gun case two bungees and awannabe alice type frame. And still got room for the misc. doo dads.
