This is my first post, So I'll start out by saying hello to everyone, and what an impressive site this is. I have an old Garrett detector, but after renting an XLT a few times, I am ready to upgrade. My question is this......XLT, or DFX? is there that much difference between the two? I have been watching prices on eBay, and there really isn't that big of a price gap between the two. I have really done well with the XLT I rented, and really like the vast flexibility of it . Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Paul

that is a tough choice! as far as i can tell the dfx is a dual frequency machine while the xlt is a single. the dfx is a little more flexible than the xlt and is probably a better beach machine.........however......most posts on various websites from xlt users are really positive while some of the dfx users complain that it is too complicated.they both look like great machines. i finally settled on a minelab explorer 2 and i am gathering together the money for it now! it was a hard decision though, because the whites xlt and dfx are great machines. good luck! one good thing.........whichever you choose, you will be getting a great machine!

Some dealers give the rental cost off on the purchase have you ask that question? We talked on chat about the new machine choice. Which ever you go with there is someone on this site who hunts with them.

Why limit your choices to just two?

;D

Skip those, and buy a good detector!

click on the link below and scroll down to the far bottom just below all of the pics, and read the results of several machines tested on several coins, relics, etc. and then see if you still feel the same about buying one of those 2!

I worked up through the early Whites to the Spectrum, then XLT and finally DFX. On my ground the Slimline Spectrum was best (though heavy and with not enough programme slots), the XLT I've still got and won't part with, the DFX got sold on.
If your going to do much beach work then the twin frequencies makes life much easier and will get reasonable depth on wet sand so the DFX would be the best choice.
For land use if your not going to want to work on the settings and way up ground conditions and the type of target then the XLT is ideal.
Re the Nexus its very deep and seems a great machine far outpacing the Explorer/DFX/Fisher CZ's when I tested them together but is not suited for the wet sand or areas of high mineralisation so consideration of the use its to be put to has to be made.

I would have to agree with U K Brian.

I have posted this before but I'll do it again. I bought my DFX for Mark Swann, (search google or Western Eastern Treasure for Mark and Reba Swann). He, without reservation said around here, Tennessee the xlt would serve me fine. If I were going to hunt in AZ or some place that has bad mineralization or in salt water areas then the DFX would help. Mark relic hunts with a souped up XLT and his wife uses a Troy Shadow. They also travel over seas to treasue hunt. I have seen his collection and it is unbelievable. I ended up buying his wifes DFX that stayed in the closet most of the time. I have not regretts buying the DFX but if I had to save some money I'd go with the XLT.

My opinion is you need to buy what you have confidence in FWIW.
