Which Pinpointer?

That's kinda' like asking "boxers or briefs"! ;) A lot of people own several detectors but not many own several pinpointers. If they do, they haven't written up evaluations on them. The only one I've ever had is the Automax II that I originally got free with a detector. It is relatively inexpensive, $39.00 on sale most of the time at Kellyco. It works is about all I can say about it......will nearly have to be touching the target to get a response, but it has a really long probe and can reach down into a hole nearly 11". But it is big and hard to carry around. If I can afford it, I think my next probe will be one of the smaller lighter weight ones. Using a probe makes all the difference in the world for me especially when trying to locate small targets. Once you get near, and if your pinpoint isn't precise, you can often find your target and save a lot of digging. I would definately say get one, but am at a loss as to which one. Sorry, not much help. Monty

Thanks for the help...I have a MXT. Does the detector type you use make a difference? I have a hole plugger and it is a pain to keep standing up to re-check my hole....

For the Sunray probe it does make a difference because it runs off the electronics on your detector and they are all different. The Sunray is the most expensive probe you will find too. We're saying pinpointers when I think we actually mean electronic probes. The pinpointer is what comes with our detector to locate the spot to dig. The probe helps you find the target after you have already started digging. I have a Sunray probe for my GTI 2500. I would not put it on an inexpensive detector due to the cost alone. It is actually a mini-coil and will penetrate up to 4 inches of soil to locate a target.....on my GTI 2500 at least. It may perform better or worse on some other models? On shallow targets it is possible to skip exing or pinpointing with your detector and you can locate the target precisely with the Sunray probe...eliminating a lot of getting up and down if that's the problem. I have a bad back and it is for me. Monty

I love my Vibraprobe. Wouldn't go detecting without it. The Battery went dead yesterday and I was without a spare. it took about to holes without it for me to call it a day. Kellyco has them, kinda expencive but worth every penny.

I have been using a White's Bullseye II, and like it really well. You will be lost without one if you start using one or the batteries go dead while your out. I can see where something with a longer probe would be beneficial from time to time.

Ive got the bullseye 140 that comes with your MD from Kellyco, Honestly, the thing is useless. You have to be within an inch to get any reading on any size coin. I ended up using it on a wall to find some nails in studs to mount my guitar holder, lol. Its in my tool box now. :-*

Oh my! In a tool box. No need to let it clutter up your tool box. If I were you I would just send it to me ;D ;D I would promise to take it on walks in the park a minumum of twice a month. LOL

I like to use a small screen box and simply sift the dirt. I've found lots of non-metal goodies this way. It's also the fastest way to find the coin.

? ? ? The way I look at it is the bullseye would be useless if it picked up metal at a greater distance than it does. Especially if you're hunting a trashy area. Imagine trying to pinpoint a coin when everytime you get the bullseye within 4" of the hole it goes off because of all the trash targets near the coin. First off one should be able to pinpoint a target within an inch with the metal detector. Two inches at most. If somebody has to consistantly dig a larger than 4" diameter plug to recover a coin sized target they need to practise pinpointing more.
? ? ?The bullseye is great at locating a target that you may have just missed when you dug your plug. Checking the side of the hole with the bullseye can find that missed target.Copper cents, small earrings, charms, cufflinks etc. can be missed while taking dirt out of the bottom of your plug. Rechecking that dirt with a bullseye can help you find that small target.
? ? ?And the bullseye II with the light is very helpful when checking the bottom of the hole after the sun goes down. My headphones block out almost all noise so the vibrate mode on my bullseye II also comes in handy.
? ? ?Before I owned one I thought that pinpointers were useless also. I've changed my mind. But I got mine as part of the package deal when I bought my detector. My dealer wasn't going to take any money off the price if I didn't take it so now I own one. I honestly dont think I'd pay full retail price though.?
I need to use my pinpointer on maybe 5% of the holes I dig. But when I do need it I'm glad I have it. But If I didn't have them already I'd buy headphones or an extra coil before a pinpointer.

I understand your point and agree with you slow sweeper but I think I meant to say, What is useless is the sensitivity adjustment. If it was adjustable from say 3" that would be perfect but as they are now the fine tuning only tunes to within an inch and anything under that isnt very usefull.

I gitcha Nicksan. :) And like I said, I don't use it much anyway. But it has come in handy a few times. Killerwine asked for some input about pinpointers. I threw in my two cents worth.
