Which machine for water department?

A buddy of mine works for the local water department, they are always looking for the meter bases, which get covered up in dirt, they are concrete with a cast iron lid, what would be a good machine for him to buy, the locate the bases?

How deep are they. Most machines will "see" through some concrete.

I worked for the county water department for more than 20 years . you want a tool made for the trade not a hobby detector.
this detector will pick up valve boxes and meter tops at 6ft and won't pick up any aluminum or other non ferrous trash.

Check to see if there's a land surveying supply in your area. The schonstedt is just one of the various stick type ferrous only machines. I think Fisher metal detectors has something similar to this. But the Notka makro simplex would work and to search the persons yard (with permission) after locating water shut off.... hehe
