I've been looking for two weeks now (not solid) for information regarding coils for the Infinium.

Which coil would be the best for Florida's beach sands? It came with the 10x14 dd coil, in which by the way worked fine. But from what I've been reading the 10x14 mono should work better. I'm mostly going to be using it for beach hunting.

Would the 10x14 mono or the 8" mono be the best option? Do they both seem to get the same depth? I know that one will cover more area per swing but the other would work better in junkier areas.

So I guess the main question is should I just stick with the dd coil or should I go with the mono?

Another minor question, why in all of the pictures for the Infinium do they mount it on the long shaft for diving? I know it doesn't come with the dive shaft like the Sea Hunter does. Can one mount the Infinium with a dive shaft or is there a sensibility issue with mounting the coil close to the control box?

Thanks.

John, if you out there, jump in.

In my experience pulse detectors have trouble with the box being close to the coil. I've never taken the Infinium diving, but this is the case with the Whites PI.

As for the coils, the larger DD coil is maybe not quite as deep as the mono, but it covers more ground at the bottom of the coil's field unlike the mono so you won't have to over lap as much and cover more sand is less time.

Thanks Sandman. Your advice 3 1/2 years ago got me addicted to this hobby. I think our conversation started out with a punch line about blondes and brunets :laughing9:. Now I have all these detectors (look at the list on the side) because I'm always trying to see which one is better. Missing from the list are ones that I bought off ebay and then sold them for one reason or another. My only conclusion is that all have their benefits and all have some down side.

I can see each coil for the Infinium has its own benefit, which makes the decision even harder.

Take care and stay warm.

JP,

The 14" DD and the 14" mono and the 8" mono all get about the same depth. The 14" mono is alot lighter than the stock DD. The 8" mono is more sensitive than the others and is the most sensitive coil in the set. I use it alot for nugget hunting. But my most used coil is the 14" mono as it covers alot of ground without wearing me out. Just get the 8" mono and see of you like it. You really dont need another coil other than the stock one, unless the weight of it bothers you. You wont miss anything with it. My test on both 14" coils is the mono gets an inch more depth than the DD. And in most test like on buried nickle they got the exact same depths. The small DD's are mainly for prospecting as that is what the Infinium was designed for. DIVING was secondary and BEACH use after that. Good luck, it is my most used machine now.

Thanks for the advice and information Alan.

I couldn't believe how deep the dector went on just a small piece of aluminum the size of a nickel. I didn't have a tape measure with me but the piece in the wet sand was down at least 10 to 12 inches. The machine is very impressive. I like how in the guide book it says that larger objects can be detected several feet down.

I hope one day I can get out to gold country with it. The main reason I bought it is so that when my wife wants to visit her brother in California I can take off for a couple of days ;D

Well, what might be a surprise, is that the 8" mono actually gets more depth then the 10" x 14" mono. My results were also substantiated by another person, doing similar testing. So, which is best? I have done extremely well with the 8" mono coil during the last three years. However, the 10" x 14" mono covers more surface area, and is lighter then the 10" x 14" DD coil. In my case, a water hunt can last up to 9 hours, and I am not a firm believer of hip mounting my units to the higher degree of wires at the coil site/electronic box wearing out quickly and shorting out. There is nothing wrong with the large "DD" coil. However, unless the matrix is highly mineralized, it just isn't really any advantage to me.

So this year I am going to mostly use the 10" x 14" mono coil, unless there are more junk targets, in which case I might switch to the 8" mono coil or my 3" x 7".

Below are my recent test results between the 8" mono vs. 10" x 14" mono using a 22 bullet, a small gold ring and a large silver ring.
