Which Beach?

Do you mean, 1 day to hunt, for their reaction to swell/surf/erosion conditions? Or 1 day to hunt for just general (like dry sand) "any-time" average hunting? Because if you meant the wet-sand + erosion, that can change all the time, where one beach is great, and another slightly different-facing beach can be poor. Then a week later, the 2 beaches can be vice-versa on the wet! And if you meant wet sand, what days (so answerer's can look at swell & tide charts to make guesses). So you gotta be more specific.

I mean I will be visiting the grandkids and only get one day. I know I'm making it hard, but just a suggestion as to a decent dry sand beach where I won't get run off or arrested and lose my detector. I'm a visitor and don't know the local laws. I'll check the tide charts and weather after I get there and hope I can hunt when the tide is going out. Otherwise, it will just be high and dry hunting and a chance to decompress from noise for a while.

Thanks,
A

At no beach in So, CA would you be "arrested" .... "loose your detector", etc... Yup, whether it's city, county, state, or local, none of the southern CA beaches have any known restrictions. Notice I say "known", because if you were to ask enough questions (like on the state or fed. level) you might get someone to tell you "no". But in practice, people detect on any and all beaches down there, and no one cares.

I've heard of a few beaches where there are some exclusive resorts (malibu enclaves, private beach-side clubs, etc...) where if you get too high up towards their resort tennis courts, security tries to shoo you away. But as long as you're down below the high water line, you can ignore them.

As far as what beaches for "anytime dry sand" type hunting, then I'll leave that to southern CA hunters to chime in. Basically, the more touristy, the better.

What I did one time was to make a board with all the names of the beaches I could hunt and I added a dial that I could spin. where it stopped is where I went hunting and let luck decide what I was going to find. All that thinking of tides, moon phases, sun's position in the sky, weather made my head ache. I started going when I had time and had more fun.

It started to get really bad when I started to spin for, "two out of three"........... :laughing7:

Any one where people gather and play.....Matt

Sounds like a good idea! I may bring this up to my MD buddies here at home. ;D

Hi ThTX,

No problems detecting any beach in this area. Some are more pounded then others (like Huntington Beach) but they are big enough to still a goodie or two.

Your best bet is summertime though for recent drops. Wintertime we have to be more thoughtful and find the "special" places.

HH Joe
