going to take a vacation next month and we have been going to go to folly beach, but now wife is thinking myrtle beach. so i thought i'd ask some of you here which you think would be the best to go to at the end of august for some detecting of course ! thanks in advance for your views ;)

The best beach is one where tourist go to the beach wearing a lot of jewelry and carrying a lot of change and go back to the motel with no jewelry or money. Haven't found that place myself yet though. ;D

Seriously, I have found most beaches to be about the same. There's a lot of crape - bottle tops, pop tops, crushed cans, sinkers, fish hooks, crushed beer cans, nails, parts off boats, galvanized things, etc. and not much good stuff. There is always change and the occasional ring, bracelet, etc. The mix is different on different days and different beaches.

Most beaches that have tourist also have several to many people who metal detect the beach on a regular basis. The beaches in Georgia and South Carolina I detect, have at least 2-3 other people detecting at most any time of the day.

So my advice, since a beach is a beach is a beach, is to get the best beach machine you can afford and learn how to use it as best you can. That means a good test bed and practice, practice, practice. If you have an old sandbox nearby, use it for testing and wet it down with some Instant Ocean from the pet store. Just out hunt the old retired guys (oops did I just dis myself) and the guys with the Harbor Freight machines.

Now if you are going to surf hunt, that is a different bird.

thanks daryl. which ever one we decide to go to we are planning on getting up eary and hitting the beach before sunlight , and then again late in the evening. thanks for your information ;)

Hunting at night I can relate to having done a lot of it. You should be familiar with the beach and know what kind of low life spends the nights there. I would mount a light stick on my scoop basket to help in the recovery time. A small flashlight that you can turn on an off easily help also. At a saltwater beach I would stay out of the water at night for safety reasons, yours.......

thanks daryl and sandman ! maybe we will just stick to hunting in the light , just go early morn and again in the evening till almost dark , your right i think would be the safe thing to do ;)

You also need to consider the tide. You can hunt the sand at low tide and it's where people have been swimming at high tide. Works pretty good. Just work the water line and up.
