Where to start???

Reading is a good idea. I have "The Art & Science Of Dumpster Diving" I have only picked at the top of my apartments dumpster.

But you really do not need to read anything more than
find dumpster
open lid
pinch nose
pick around
FIND SOMETHING YOU LIKE
close lid

dan has it summed up, find dumpter, open, look, dig. Watch for needles and glads, try and stay outta junky apartments dumters usually nothing but bugs, diabetic needles and garbage. If you see something on the side of the road grab it it might not be there on the way back.

I havent dove in awhile but I always had luck in the city, strip malls etc but I see alot of dumpsters locked nowadays.A good stick with a sturdy hook on the end is helpful, you just got to get out there and do the dive.

For them locked dumpsters I use a golpher grabber that old people use. The door open just enough to drag out the bags with out the tearing.

College apartments are a good 1st. choice.

yep, when I moved my daughter out of her dorm (graduated from university) last June there was a skid just for electronics. I stopped and looked and got scolded. "those are for recycling" she said. Thats right, I told her a hundred times all my recycling paid for her college.

(four & a half years down and one & a half to go)

My role model and inspiration, you go, Dan. And you tell her....so many of today's generation have no idea of what their parents have done and continue to do for them.

She has already had a little awakening. The final two years of college is an animal training and care program. A lot of graduates go on to work in movies when any animal is required. She found out that within 5 years that profession will no longer exist. CGI animation is going to be so good that anytime an animal is needed for a movie part it will be done on computer and look real.

A lot of graduates also go on to work in zoo's doing animal shows and caring for the animals.

I just drive around looking for house clean-out type dumpsters - those are the best(!)
