Where to start metal detecting

I will be getting my first metal detector soon and I will be moving to Staten Island ny soon too. I won't have a backyard to start metal detecting in like I'm sure most people do so I need some advice on where to start. The only two places that it seems to be legal to detect on the island are some parks and some beaches. I'm a little apprehensive with the park because I imagine I won't be able to pinpoint and may end up with a 5 x 5 hole in silver lake park. I don't think the authorities would like that much. Chime in if you live in a city that seems to discriminate against back yards.
