Hello fellow lawn aeriators,

Where do you all think MDing got its supposed "bad reputation" from. I'm just curious to what everyones feelings are on these wrong accusitions. I've always wondered myself.

Is it because we dig up "history"?????

That we're "scavengers"????

We "supposedly" tear up or leave holes in the ground????

I've personally seen kids with those cheapy detectors digging and leaving holes behind. Maybe that has something to do with it.

The bad rep is only with people who don't know what metal detecting is about. Also some government people who are blind to the fact that more history is preserved through detector users than ever will by government archaeologist. When properly presented detecting should get a fairly good reception by most.

yes, i agree some areas do look down upon MD'ing and actually go out of there way to discourage it ( my town for example >:( ) , i can't quite say for sure why, possibly greed or jealosy, maybe we're viewed as one step above begging or scavanging returnables out of trash barrels. in my town they don't want to see any md'ers anywhere but on the beaches.

one day i was told they don't want the grass damaged by one of the town workers, but when i pointed to an area that i had just searched and recovered over 50 coins from, he could not see one spot that had been dug ( i've gotten good at covering my tracks ;) ). i didn't want to cause an argument so i just said ok and left, but rest assured i'll be back at that spot on some dark and foggy night, after the tourist season is over ;) , i now understand what the attraction is of hunting after dark ;) , especially at schools and other public areas, if they don't see me and can't tell that i've been there, then they can't bitch about it ;D .

even my own family had scoffed at it, that is until they had seen some of my finds ;D

It's probably a combination of things. I know that bad diggers do some harm. Trespassers do as well. I also think the archeologists have done a lot to soil our reputation. I have met a few good ones, but most figure that if it's in the ground, it's theirs. Many take any opportunity to rag on us.

As far as I know the hobby has a good reputation around here. I've never heard anyone speak badly about the hobby. I have visited potentially good sites where a slob detectorist has been working, leaving holes uncovered and plugs scattered about. I try to fill them in if possible. Usually if they dig any trash they just throw it back on the grond so I police up the area beforeI leave. Like any hobby or sport there is afew slobs that almost ruin it for the others. A few in the Hysterical society think we're stealing history, but a lot of our finds winde up in museums or civic displays. We need to be better organized to get the message out as to what we really do that is good, JIM

Just like anything you do, the ones that are doing it wrong get noticed the most! As stated above, some good press can never hurt. One good story at a time... Eventually we can combat the negative press that exsists in some places.

I think your treasurenet name(or handle) about sums it up. I'm sure there's various other reasons. But many times i think what the owner see's, is a 6 ft. furry gopher standing in front of him, asking permission to put in a new tunnel system in his front yard. HH

1. Fellow detectorist who don't care and break laws and leave unfilled holes
2. People who don't know what we are about and how we work. ( So they asume and judge)

Thats all I can think of.

well i went out late last night, back to the spot that i had done so well at and then had got chased off by the townies before i had even covered a 1/10 of the area.

i started at the high school and only found one clad and lots of trash so i went back towards that sweet spot that i had done so well at, i started on the beach, and i had just got there when some kids had asked if i could help them find their keys, the cops were there helping them or at least letting them use their flashlights to look for them, so i got my daughters detector out of the van to let the kid help with the searching, well long story short the keys were found and the kids and the cops went on there way, so i took my chances and went back to the grassy area that i had done so good at before, only to realize that someone had md'ed the area, as before i couldn't go 5 feet with out finding coins, but last night i had to cover nearly every sq. inch of the large field area just to get about a buck in clad >:( , but i did find something else i liked that they missed ;D , i'll post it in todays finds shortly ;)

now i don't know if it was a visiting tourist ( nutso ??? ), or one of those townies who had chased me off before, that MD'ed the area, but the cops were right around there all night, and they saw me the whole time and never bothered me once about detecting on the grass.

next time i find a sweet and productive spot like that, i won't be so easy to shoo away, or else i'll be back there that night to finish what i started. i don't give up so easy ;) .

We had our bad apples 40 years ago but our bad reputation today reflects media indoctrination since the 60's.

It is a natural reflection of the preservation/environmental movement in this country. For the last 30 years the liberal media has presented environmental indoctrination on a daily basis. Disturbing the ground in any fashion is harming the environment. The environmental message which has been preached down for 30 years is that people or companies who use public or private lands(mining companies, oil industry, logging companies, miners, campers, , home or property owners etc)are harming the environment. Their activities directed toward using the land should be eliminated or severely restricted.

In other words the public has accepted the Preservationist message.

i'd say that you are right about that, also that same way of thinking is taught in the schools today from Kindergarden thru college, they justify it by saying it's best to err on the side of conservation, but they have gotten so one sided that it's absolutely rediculous, just watch any show about commercial fishing, farming, logging, mining, etc. and see just how biased the TV and media industry has become.

I think it has to do with the Bible.

Folks who do not live and believe in the Bible resent your being a TREASURE HUNTER.

Genesis 43:23
Your God, the God of your father, has given you treasure in your sacks

Genesis 10:9
Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the LORD

LOL Now thats funny :-\

Sheesh!! Well no wonder!! I thought he said treasure in my socks!!
