I tend to do the "load the car with gas, and drive around looking for house's being torn down" Or go to the library and research old Plat maps. Also see if there are any detecting clubs. Check out ghost towns in Phoenix, you can do that online. So, so many options!

Try researching up North around Prescott area, Wickenburg area, or heading towards Tucson. You can also look at ghosttown.com but most anything you can get to by car has been hit & hit hard. There's a book called Roadside History of Arizona that might give you some ideas. If not it'll give you some nice trips.
