Where are the nickels whites xlt

I've been thinking this for awhile.....maybe the nickels aren't there in the first place. After studying approx 600 coins received either back in change or detecting, the percentage of nickels was about the same....very low. Don't beat yourself up over the nickels like I use to do.

I just got my XLT memorial day weekend. I am still learning this new detector. My previous detectors have included the eagle spectrum, the 6000 di, the 4000 d, and the very old 1 d/b. I have found more nickles with my XLT (one roll returned the the bank, and working on second one), then I think in my previous 23 years of detecting. I use the coin mode. I have noticed that nickel hits are usually in the 17-22 range. Anything higher is usually a pull tab, and lower is usually foil. Lastnight, I even got nickle hits twice that were right on top of pull tabs, another was a quarter in the same hole as a pull tab. So not only does this machine pick out the nickles when its close to junk, it picks out other stuff when its in the same hole as junk.

I find that the easiest way to fix this situation is to use the learn accept feature..........

1) enter into the preset or custom program you prefer..........

2) scroll down to pro options.........

3) scroll down to discrimination mode

4) scroll down to learn accept mode

5) press enter to turn accept on

6) place a nickel on the ground free of other debris and metal

7) pass the coil over the nickel til the sound becomes clear

8) once the nickel has been learned.........

9) repeat the above steps and turn off learn accept feature.........if you don't remember this step the machine learn everything from that point on

10) then from the preset program menu

11) scroll down to any of the custom programs

12) <enter> then save your program

Well the yard must have had no nickels because I went to the park the yesterday and found all kinds of nickels no problem. Weird how only certain coins were lost in the yard.
Thanks everyone.

For me the nickels are the hardest coin of all to find. On every detector I have tried the nickel and the pull tab souind exactly alike to me. I have a hearing loss in that frequency range and it drives me nuts sometimes. With my ACE 250 I have found more nickles than ever before. Why? I don't know exactly but maybe the sound or tone is just a bit different than on other machines.?? JIM

I have an XLT and I do find nickels but they are a bit more difficult. I use a custom program for coins and here in western Michiigan a strong signal in the +15 to +17 range is usually a nickel while pull tabs are more toward +22 to +24. Problem is if you want rings, you have to dig all the strong signals between +10 & +30. If you do, the nickels will come as well.

I always leave my DC phase turned to ON and I rely more on my pinpoint VDI number (small number in upper right corner) to tell me whether to dig or not.

I haven't tried the learn/accept option on my machine that a previous poster referred to but it sounds like a useful feature that is worth experimenting with...particularly for jewelry.

Cheers, Jim

Jim;

The "learning" capability of the XLT is great. A couple months ago a friend asked me to find an earring his wife lost from the plastic ear of an antique doll. She collects and resells these dolls which are very valuable.

I used the remaining earring to teach the XLT to find it and ignore everything else.
After 20 minutes I found the lost earring in the tall grass of their yard.

The earring was 3/4 the size of a BB.

But the truth is I have found more valuables with an 'inferior" detector than my XLT.
The inferior detector has me digging more holes. Sure I get a lot more trash but the XLT causes me to pass up good digs when the signal doesn't positively identify it.

My daughter digs everything beep. Silly child. But she has a collection many of my MD friends envy.
