THE EMPIRE STATE
Detector(s) used
ACE 250,Whites prism2
The other day I was detecting state land and found a cellar hole,it was hand stacked field stones and boulders all the way round and went at least 8 feet into the ground with decaying trees and such in the bottom from what i could see.Now I was there for about 5 minutes no more when on the top of this cellar I got a dollar signal, getting excited seeing this was the first time the detector rang out in that range I started removing a few rocks from what i could gather was a porch type deal made of all flat stones covered in myrtle.

As I removed the first stone and swung over the spot too insure it wasn't a false reading it still marked out at $1 range about 6 inches on my display, when I felt a really sharp pinch on my pinky finger and brushed my finger on my pant leg it happened again. So I inspected my finger to see a bee re-peatingly trying to sting that very same finger before I know it my hooded jacket is covered in about 20 angry yellow jackets.I quickly gathered up my stuff and hauled A$$ outta there to my vehicle getting the last bees out from underneath my hoodie I counted 27 of those angry little things, now to my question.

What do you usually turn up when you get a dollar signal on your detector?.... whats the best thing you have found in that range?....It's a promissing spot should I go back with a bee suit?..

I did manage to find an old NEHI pop bottle on my way out of there..and about 4 stingers on my fingers and stomach..lol

Thanks
~Shawn~

So far Shawn, all but 3 of my "dollar" signals have been large pieces of trash. Metal cans a model T hubcap about 20" down and such. I have never gotten..no wait..i jist rememberd, once i got a Franklin. My other 3 targets were an 1848 LC,a gilted pocket watch and most recently a cap gun.I treat my dollar signals jist like "ring" signals. i know the ring is gonna be a pull tab and i know the dollar is gonna be trash but i dig 'em anywho. In fact..i dig everything..ya never know.
Cooler weather is comin Shawn, it'll put dem bees in thier place and you most definately need to git back there to that spot.Smells like old coinage to me.

Yea that's what I figured too with cooler weather coming and all,I've definitely noticed less mosquito's this year due to it being so cool at night.

thanks Jim and I treat every signal as you do,and dig it anyway

I have only been detecting a short time, but the two times I had a target ring up as a dollar turned out to be aluminum cans buried deeper than indicated on the detector.

I was running my MXT in my own back yard. It rang up $1. I said "Sure it is" to myself and dug it. Turned out to be a Eisenhower bicentennial dollar. Whoda' guessed.

usually when i get a big signal like that i lift my detector off of the ground to see how high i can raise my detector and still get a signal , if i can raise my coil farther up then 6 inches of the ground and still get a loud signal i dont dig , 6 inches off the ground plus however deep in the ground it is and still get a good signal spells pop or beer can to me , dug several of them ;)

Normally trash. Everything from car irrors to soda cans.

I have never found a cartwheel, but have found some halves. I wasnt using ID machines back then, so all I know is that they were good signals.

maybe those bee's thought you were a thuggin with that hoodie?

cellar holes are junk receptacles, from the nails that held the structure together to the
metal roof (if it was metal) that collapsed, and not to mention what was left or discarded
over time.you cannot think like a coinshooter inside a cellar hole.when it gets cooler
and have lots of time on your hands you can sift through it like an archeological dig (use
gloves).lots of hard work in wich the rewards may or may not be worth it.you can detect
the exposed sides for caches if you do not want to excavate the inside.definatly and
obviously detect the area around the hole.
