When is it time to upgrade?

Hey guys - Been using my MTX for about 7 years now on the weekends and have become pretty confident with it. I've never used the PROSPECTING mode though. Always wanted to living in AZ, but figured if I was really serious about prospecting, I'd invest in a GPX or something geared to gold ONLY.

Even though I'm happy with the MXT, I'm considering a V3i upgrade.

The question is when and why should I upgrade? I consider an MXT an above average detector for the beginner, but am I missing out with an higher end detector? I primarily use the COIN program but have occasionally used the RELIC mode when getting permission to hunt "old" houses in Phoenix - like 1940s. Yes, Phoenix isn't a historical gem for detecting..lol

So if I dedicate my time with the V3i, will I have more sucess than the MXT.

I'm going to the place I bought my MXT this week to see if they have a V3i to test - it's Rockzona. Great place if I remember back in 2005.

thoughts from MXT users who have upgraded.

well one or the other there is no updating once you buy the v3i unless you get a pulse inductive type the mxt is a keeper any way you look at it.there is no one detector for the cheap...

Here's my take. Keep the MXT and forget about upgrading.

I went through the same upgrading question earlier this year & quite frankly it's not worth it especially if you already like the MXT.

I have an MXT Pro and I convinced myself I was missing stuff so I bought an E-Trac. What a disappointment that was. I might have been more impressed if I was coming of an entry level detector maybe. Comparing the ET & MXT Pros on signals, the ET never hit anything the MXTP couldn't. Not once! Long story short, I traded the ET for a VX3. While I like the VX3 much much more than the E-Trac, I'm not convinced it's a "better" machine than the MXT Pro at the end of the day.

I wouldn't trade my MXT for 3 of any other detector, I've detected with others that have the V3i and the MXT will get as deep for sure, though there are some nice features like the freq offset and such but to me not worth the extra cost. I also like to adjust and go to spend more time detecting and less time going through menu's to make changes. If you do have any real old deep targets the whites D2 coil paired with the MXT is a deep coin killer for sure. HH

I upgraded 3 years ago after using my MXT for 5 years and never turned my head back. My V3i definitely will get the deeper targets, especially them 10+ inch silver dimes. My brother uses a Minelab SE and we were about neck and neck when I was still using the MXT but after I got the V3i I can now follow him around and dig good targets he missed ;D

I'd say you are well off with the MXT since you are so comfortable with it. THink of it as driving cars. A new car may operate differently but still get you where your going. I enjoy learning new detectors and would upgrade or downgrade just to try something different. I definitely downgraded with the AT Pro for instance. But I have many toys to play with.

I have a Tee Shirt that reads, "Been There - Done That - Be Back With A Better Detector"

My answer is, when you can afford it and it makes sense to you.

An old friend of mine, now deceased, used to say "It ain't the detector, it's the man using it". That's just as true today as it was in the 1980's. Yes, great strides have been made in detector technology but the truth remains that a pull tab will read like a ring and a wad of aluminum foil will read like any number of things depending on how big it is. If you want a new detector, buy one. At least part of the fun can be learning a new machine but don't expect to suddenly find yourself digging nothing but coins and jewelry.
