WHEAT PENNY totals from COIN ROLL HUNTING for 2008

Silver gets most of the love on this board so it's time to shine the spotlight on wheat pennies! This won't be a copper value aggregate or a tracking list (GMan handles that very ably) but simply a place to list your monthly totals. I've always been curious how many wheats are retired from circulation each year on this board. Now we'll find out! I'll include my own personal tracking list but no one's obliged to provide more info than you want.

Here's my final date list for 2008. Reached my goal of more than 50% of the series (72 out of 140).

In 2008, T-Net coin roll hunters pulled [red]35,919[/red] wheaties from circulation, or 98 per day. Wow! Thanks for contributing everyone! It's not too late to report final totals if you haven't yet.

265 wheats so far in 2008. But I am out of town for work 5 of the next 8 weeks, and the 3 I am home will be busy, so I hope to reach 300 by the end of March. LOL

I searched 49,450 pennies this month and found one Indian Head (1895) and 386 Wheats. A teller saved me an additional 13 Wheats. The ones I needed for my albums were 1912 and 1943D.

Out of 10,500 pennies searched, I came up with 42 Wheats. The oldest Wheat was a 1918, and I also found an 1888 Indian Head for those that care.

I have been hitting the pennies hard this year. All of last year I only found 111 Wheats. So if you do the math and I keep searching at the rate I have been this year, I should break last years total sometime in the month of March.

This was my first month of CRH and mainly focused on halves. Did sort one box of pennies and several rolls from the grocery store.

Finally finished all the pennies I picked up in January.

Searched 100,000 pennies.
Found 297 wheat pennies representing 61 different varieties.
Only 8 short of filling the 1941-1958 whitman folder for the year (9 short of all varieties from 1941-1958)

The missing 8 are: 1942-S, 1943-D, 1943-S, 1947-S, 1952, 1953-S, 1954, 1958 and the 1941-S Large S (I did find the 1941-S small S)

I always thought it was strange that the 1952-P showed up so infrequently (I haven't found one yet either). In a 100,000 penny survery I did in 1996 it was one of only two post-1940 wheats that I never found.

Then I discovered why - It has the 3rd lowest mintage of any P-mint wheatie from 1934-1958, behind the 1954 and 1938. I'm always learning!

Feb 2008 Total

148 more wheats out of 55,000 searched.

Searched 55,000 pennies.
Found 148 wheat pennies including 5 new varieties for 2008.

Still sans IHC for 2008 though...

Total for Feb is 98 wheaties. Picked up 3 boxes this month with brand spanking new pennies in all the rolls Also found out that someone in my area is copper hoarding! Picked up $20 in hand rolled and there wasn't a copper in the batch.
