WHATZIT on 1880s RIFLE RANGE - STILL NO CLUES???

Found this one just off the range at the 50 yard point.

Here are my thoughts:
75mm long
30mm wide
9mm deep

Heavy Lead alloy

The back has a crudely cut off corner to identify the top of the lettering.

Letters appear to be "RLM" in reverse. Might be a B instead of R but it does have a kick at the bottom.

Its broken after the M and maybe only a small piece missing before the R. I think the R is the first letter as it has a hole which goes all the way through it, to line it up with? It also has a thin line boarder at the start with 3 sets of 3 berries (top, middle & bottom)

The lettering looks medieval in style but I believe it to be Victorian Gothic revival.

If it were a print block you would expect the letters outward not recessed. Unless they wanted a black background & then colour in by hand or another block the white areas?

If it were a mould of some type the lead would melt or was it used on clay??

Lastly the letters don't make a word, do they?

Any ideas??

Re: LAST WHATZIT FROM THE 1880s RIFLE RANGE???

I'm taking a stab at this although I announce here and now that I AM OFTEN WRONG. Still, I can't resist the temptation to try....

Perhaps it somehow relates to the Battle of Britain and German aircraft?

See this link for details http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Messerschmitt_Bf_110

Have I stumped everyone??

PBK on holiday? (Do we allow this?)

More thoughts:

Too detailed to be a print block, but if its a mould the finer detail seems to shallow??

Mould for what & how does it work??

DugFinds-

Now I'm no expert, but i think what you may have is some type of large wax seal.Usually for letters and such but it being so big, I'm inclined to think maybe it was for some type of crop...I have a lead wax seal from the civil war that's almost as big but has a company name on it....Maybe the letters on yours are someones innitials??
not entirely shore on this but if this helps let me know.

Thanks for your thoughts. :)

I thought along similar lines on the company name but can't find any starting RLM. As I'm sure it was more than 3 initials I don't think its personal.

I will take it to the local Finds Liason Officer, but they are not interested in modern stuff so I'm unlikely to get far.

How about a die for embossing leather goods (saddles, holsters, belts...)?

Looks like the back side has take quite a beating.

Now that I flip it over the first letter does look like an R

It also appears to be a "home made" casting of a plate or tag that perhaps was a piece of equipment.

There seems to be (what looks like to me the impression of a screw or bolt head on one side and (perhaps there was another like impression on the other end that has been lost. A faint border with round corners are also visible.

On the back side it seems that the lead or solder while casting was not of even temperature and some ridges have formed.

Just a thought.
