What's wrong with my schools & parks.

I decided to hit the local schools and playgrounds the past few days. The weather is warming up and the kids are out playing more so I thought the timing would be as good as it gets. I have noticed quite a few recent posts of some pretty fantastic finds in these type areas so off I went. Hit about 10-12 playgrounds, 4 sand volleyball courts, 4 tot lots, 6 pavilions, a horseshoe lot, a bandstand, and while on the way home hit an old campground. No bling. No rings. No earrings. No necklaces. No pins. No bracelets. No chains. Just new clad. The only surprises were a rolled penny token from The Dells, a 1906 V nickel at the campground, and two Sacagawea dollars (1 at the campground and 1 at a playground). Now for somebody who just found two gold coins and doesn't think they will ever find another, it DOES NOT do your heart good to flip out a Sacagawea dollar with your trowel. Nope. Not good at all.

So my question is, what is different about the schools and play areas I am hunting (and probably others as well) and the ones that seem to hold much more interesting things.?? Are these places in big cities, intercity, rich suburbs, isolated places where there may be nobody detecting?? Where?? If the places I hunted were "hunted to death," I would not have found the clad or the Sacagawea dollar. Can those members who have found the neat stuff while competing with the kids for space around the swings :-), provide some information about the number and characteristics of the kids who use the area? About how often do you find things better than clad? Anything that can help those of us new to finding the good places narrow down where we need to be going. I don't think it is just luck. I think there is something about the people or the place that makes it yield what it does.

My take - $6.95 for two days in about 10-11 hours = $0.63 cents an hour pretty much right on target for our calculated yield.

Daryl

p.s. At least there aren't TOO MANY pop tops at the elementary/middle schools.

Re: What's wrong with my schools & parks.

I'll tell you this, I don't know why it is....But my clad finds have gone down by about 50% on my outings since trading my DFX for my SE. That DFX sure did sniff out clad coins and it added up fast. Whats the old saying...Treasure is where it is, not where you think it might be. Don't worry to much about not finding bling, it will come. ;D

Re: What's wrong with my schools & parks.

I think its all random luck. You MAY found an older coin in a tot lot or on a new school, and/or, you may find nothing but clad in your older properties. My folks live on a full acre of land, and their house was built in the 1860's, and so far (after really scouring the place), I've only found ONE wheat penny, and the rest modern clad and what zits. On the flip side, my great-great aunts house,(her house was built circa the late 1800's), has produced for me approx. 15 wheat pennies, 2 mercs, and three indian heads; plus of course, a bunch of clad. I plan to go over and over my parents house's property at different angles again, but I may find additional older coins, I may not. This is all just my personal opinion from experience of course. I hope this helps you. Oh and by the way, congrats on those 2 gold coins!!!!

Re: What's wrong with my schools & parks.

Some retired guy hits all my old schools, parks etc I had for years. They are always totally picked clean. He has took a lot of joy out the hobby for me.

Re: What's wrong with my schools & parks.

Well, I hate to say this, but like the rest of us, you are just paying your dues. We all find clad coins, everyday we are out. Sometimes we find some nice Silver coin or maybe an Indian Head penny, but we still pick up clad coins.

I suggest if you are not using a headset, Use One! I have hunted many sites where there are lots of kids. While hunting I always wear a headset. Most kids who are just wondering what your doing and are interested, I try to explain what I'm doing. But the ones who are out to give you a hard time, a headset is a must. Just act like you don't hear them, and the first thing out of there mouths is, he's wearing a headset and he can't hear you. Haha, that's just exactly what I like them to think.

I guess another hint is hunt when they are in class, early in the morning, just after they start school is an excellent time to hunt.

You might also look for a school area, that has a work out area for adults. Walk those paths of the work out area. I once found a New York World series ring on one of those paths in Bradenton Fla. Look for those sites where mom swings junior. Sometimes a bracelet will fall off of mom's arm. Don't be afraid to hunt those tiny tot swing area's also.

I would also try laying down some jewelry, such as small ladies rings, bracelets, necklaces and mens rings. See where they come in on your detector. See how you have to set your detector to pick up these items. Your DFX will do the job, you just have to learn it.

Good Luck and Remember, keep the coil to the soil, Ringfinder

Re: What's wrong with my schools & parks.

I agree that there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason for old versus clad at homesites. I was just wondering if those people posting the really good finds from the playgrounds and such live in areas or detect in areas that have a certain demographic or some other factor that would help identify places where the odds were better. Maybe the schools are very large. We tend to have small schools here. Maybe the playgrounds are the cool hangout spots for older kids after school. Here, the cops will run you off. Maybe the kids wear lots of jewelry for status. Just don't know if it is just a random thing or not. If there is a pattern to the places people are finding and posting quite a bit of material other than clad, it would help us to know it.

Just the scientist in me I guess.

Re: What's wrong with my schools & parks.

I always use headphones. I never hunt when there are kids present. I don't have any distractions and while I can't be sure I'm not missing anything, I use a 4x6" DD shooter coil and work the area slow enough that I even overlap with this small coil. I routinely find items less than 1/4" in diameter more than 6" deep. I find small pieces of wire, zipper pulls, snap closures, at 5-8" so I have pretty good confidence if its there, I get a signal.

I can't detect out of the sand or chips. It is against the law to work in the grass so I'm stuck in the lot. Maybe that's a difference.

Re: What's wrong with my schools & parks.

Hey BP, The school that I found my cross at is a medium size school. We do get older kids that come over to play basketball, and hit baseballs out in the field. Try going under the equipment. I found a really cool religious (tiny though) statue, under where the kids play on top. I also find many clad coins too. Try getting as close to the equip. as you can. A lot is dropped as the kids are climbing up the ladders, ect.

Sometimes the kids are annoying. I went to this other school about 1/2 hour away and the kids were in my face constantly. If they came over to the monkey bars I would detect away from them. But it seemed like they were doing it purposefully. Well this very heavy set kid came barrelling over to where I was, he almost got my coil! I couldn't take it anymore, I asked him if his parents taught him to be RUDE!! Maybe I should have just shut up, but it was getting under my skin. I have pulled over 26.00 dollars out of this school lot, and only found a few trinkets. I found a silver zodiac charm, a gold heart w/6 stones around one edge, but it isn't real, a cheap earring, and an earring with green swavorski crystals.

At another park I found a silver charm under the toddler swing, but no clad. It is a fairly old park too, so I was surprised that I didn't find much. Or there is another detector out there somewhere?

Hope this helps some, don't give up. HH and good luck!!

Re: What's wrong with my schools & parks.

The rings I posted a bit ago are from an elementary school that has been closed. I'm not sure when it was built but I would guess 60's. Its in a generally "lower income" area now. I guess it could have been the Michigan equivalent to Beverly hills at one time, not sure. I would have bet very good money there was nothing of real value at this school, until those two holes. Also I have heard from many people how they "love" soccer fields. I have actually avoided soccer fields on occasion because of the large area to hunt, the dirt is usually like concrete and they are hard to find empty of people. This year I found my first gold chain on a soccer field. Not sure I have a point, lol. But I guess it would be, theres just no way to tell what is there. If there is clad....people have been there and dropped things. They just look alot harder for the items, the more they are worth.p.s. Id trade alot of finds for those gold coins...lol. HH dave

Re: What's wrong with my schools & parks.

:-\ We all have are high and low moments. I have worked for as little as .30 cents an hour. I guess that is why it is a hobby. I try to compete with myself. I know that my MXT helps me find more stuff. It is what makes you happen doing. I would try testing your detector. It took me 2 years to find my first ring. I found the second one a month later. I think you did good.Have fun!

Re: What's wrong with my schools & parks.

Bio,

I live in the Forth Worth -Dallas metro area, and look for the oldest schools,churches,parks,lakes,etc...and dig up everything because a coin or ring can be rejected or give a false reading if a nail or or metallic object is near by, at least mine does..bought it in 1985.
EVERYONE hits the schools and parks...mostly clad there.
Most of the good stuff comes from old lots in what were at one time the more affluent neighborhoods of the area. Houses get moved or bulldozed. Old downtown areas where buildings are torn down for parking lots.
Old lake shores and swimming holes is where I have found the most Gold rings.
Check your local history for any old carnival or fairgrounds, old popular picnic areas,etc...

United States Treasure Atlas by Thomas P. Terry is full of Ghost town listings and buried treasure tales. VOLUME 5 covers your area. You might pick up a copy on e-bay ??

Good luck, Texman

Re: What's wrong with my schools & parks.

Hello Bio,

I use to travel with my job installing phone offices and I worked and lived in Mankato back in 73-74, 77-78 and again in 1981. There was a high hill with a long slope at the bottom that we use to go tubing and sledding on in the winters, I think it was near the ski area. Do you ever detect there?

I was single back then, loved to party and the only other spots I remember were the bars (Hurdy Gerdy) , and I don't think you can detect there. ;D

I imagine there are some good spots to detect though as I remember there is a lot of history there.

Good luck.

Re: What's wrong with my schools & parks.

My 2 cents worth on a secret pattern or whatever for ya, BioProf. I think that is part of the deal, where we get to go and hunt and make many observations, at many different places. After awhile, especially if you keep a few notes like I tell my detecting buds to do, you'll see patterns forming for yourself.

Also, Don't even turn on your detector, if you don't think you should be there, anywhere! You MUST be in a more or less, positive state of mind, to begin your search. Forget anything negative you may have heard about diggin' and get right into it. You, your machine and the chosen spot. Then, Slow down, tune in let 'er go. You will find more this way, even in crappy spots. Another thing, So many places have been re-done in the last 20 or 30 years, that it's harder to come across ancient or virgin ground anymore. Inspect the vegetation on your site, VERY closely. If for instance there are only Dandy lions on a chunk of grass, chances are it's a re-done section of ground. No plantain or chickweed there mixed in the grass etc, not many old coins usually either, or they are now too deep to recover. Look more, dig less, but in better spots, would be my short tip for your town dude. ;)

Re: What's wrong with my schools & parks.

I'm with you, Professor. I don't find much more than clad and a few wheats in the school yards. Can't hunt my parks here.

Re: What's wrong with my schools & parks.

First off - congratulations on the V nickel. Those are nice to find. :)

As for your chips experience....I have tried the same thing in my area with similar results. Not much jewelry here in Northern Ohio(at least the suburbs where I live). I have even tried going to the "rich" suburbs playground area's. Not much. :P There was one elementary school that produced 4 rings for me but only one was gold(plated) and one a simple silver ring the others junk.

What always amazes me is how much clad Dave and Bobbie find down in NC. They come home with at least $10 each in clad. Not in my neighborhood.

Just gotta take what you can. I know there are rings in my area. Most likely not as plentiful and harder to find.

Re: What's wrong with my schools & parks.

If your not finding anything in your local schools, then you have detector competition and their cleaning them out before you get there. Schools are always loaded with change n jewelry here in michigan, but if u have a detectorist hitting them in the spring or at the end of fall, you have to get in before he does.

Re: What's wrong with my schools & parks.

Professor, One difference up North ,is now the kids don't carry money for lunch. Its all done electronically with Mom and Dad paying ahead and the kids being charged for lunch against an account on the computer. As far as Jewelry- - i don't think People wear as many trinkets.
All in all i think you did very well-- whats this 2 GOLD coin business??
Good luck & HH

Re: What's wrong with my schools & parks.

Hehe, you sound like me...Only I never find anything, anywhere. Dude ??? You went out once, one time in the wood chips. Sounds like you had a what we call normal tot lot hunt. (Broken Pencils and candy foil) Its all about timing. You know its very uncommon to pull 2 gold coins from the ground. As uncommon as it is to pull a nice diamond ring. Its happens but not very offten. I have hunted the tot lots half a dozzen times and only once found a .925 upper ear, earring. They are great for pockets full of clad too, but it takes time. Patience Professor... Patience.

Keep @ it and HH!!

Re: What's wrong with my schools & parks.

The parks in my city have been hit hard...so I don't bother with them anymore (20 parks in the city limits, and I have spent at least two hours in each one). Back where I grew up in Virginia, I did find silver in parks. The first was a Mercury Dime and a bunch of wheats that came in with a load of dirt. I was diggin clad all over the place and saw the fresh dirt there and I figured I might as well take a swipe or two over it. I started finding some old coins.

The other place was a school yard. I found several silver dimes there. Now that place had been POUNDED to DEATH!! But it seems that no one had ever hunted the baseball diamond! On the off-season, I was walking across the diamond with my machine on, and I started finding old coins. As soon as I got off of the sandy spots and into the outfield, the finds ceased.

In both of these scenarios, I found old coins in spots where I didn't expect to find them--and that is probably why others had missed them as well. In the case of the baseball diamond, I would imagine that everyone would have either A.) Figured that someone had already detected there because of how easy the diggin was, or B.) Failed to consider that as a possibility due to the fact that the diamond is almost always in use when the weather is decent.

Hope this helps,

Buckleboy
