Interesting piece. Is the blade curved, spoon like? It doesn't appear to be, that would rule out a marrow scoop. Plus i've never seen one with a carrying case or sheath and the blade end isn't right. Need a size for reference, what are the dimensions? Also can you make out the lettering on it?
All I can see if MADE in ITALY and A. P(or B)ANEN? _PPEMANA? Try and figure out the correct lettering. Camera glare prevents me from seeing it correctly.

Looks like a fancy fruit or veggie corer ... may be used for sampling the center of anything edible ... even cheese , Italians love their cheese ! IMHO , Woodstock

I'm a cheesemaker and that item is infeed a cheese trier used to take a sample of cheese while it's aging to see how the cheese is progressing.

If you are not going to use it, I'd love to buy it from you and out it back to its intended purpose.
