what's this?

I found this yesterday....looks like an old snuff box. It's tin and has a hinge on the back, but I've yet to get it open.
Any ideas as to what this is?

Welcome to Tnet. I'm with Indian Steve on it being a compact. It looks pretty toasty, and probably will not survive an opening. Is it about 3/8 in. thick? A shinier cousin is over here: http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/what/99164-container-tin-some-sort.html

I believe a snuff box would have a bit deeper than 3/8", having seen my grandparents cook/house keeper pull hers out quite a few times!!

Yeah, it's probably 3/8 . I think that a compact is the general consensus here. I've tried opening it, no luck. I've tried to be careful
I don't think it'll take too much.
