what's this?

I found this at an old homesite, daing back to the 1850s. Its a flat plate 2 1/4 in. x 1 1/2 in. Looks like a snake or a ? . Thanks

I'd like to say it appears to be an old Chinese or Japanese dragon on that plate... but what I'm seeing to be the face just doesn't look like a dragon. More like a squid... but there's scales, so it should be a serpent?

Maybe it is a Chinese dragon... I think I see the face now that I turned it upside down (first had to turn my laptop upside down), on the top left?

Agreed--and the earliest it would likely date is the late Victorian era.
