Dont give up. Rear brake shoes can be tricky. Hard to put on the springs without special tools. Make sure you do one wheel at a time so you can look at the other for proper assembly. You will find replacement of the front pads to be much much easier.

I have a K-D hydraulic valve lifter (tappet) remover in my toolbox, just not as heavy duty. Good to have.

It took day 1 just to get the drums off !! I was using a BFH and pry bars . very frustrating . Then , when I got the new shoes on ......the drums wouldn't fit back over !! I finally got it to work on day 3 .

And yes , I used the other brake as a guide + I took digital Pics , and I have a Haynes book . It still took me too long

Re: What's this tool for?

That tool was made for mid/late 70's 305 & 350 chev engines with soft camshafts..failure came when cam wore the bottom of the lifter thru & at the same time mushroomed the bottom of the lifter out to be slightly larger then the bore the lifter was inserted into.
mine has required 3 sets of tooth replacments.
