What's this thing?

I found this over the weekend in a rural undeveloped area of the state.I am looking for an old homesite that is supposed to be there somewhere.I haven't found anything else in this area except for a few modern shell casings.This was in my scoop as I retrieved one of those casings.IT looks like a plumbing pipe or something but it is made of porcelain,I think.It seems to have a flanged end as to attach to something.Are there any plumbers out there?When were pipe fixtures made out of porcelain? Or is it even porcelain? I've attached a close up of the end.

It's a type of ceramic insulator known as a "wall tube." Scroll about 1/3 down at:

Thanks a million PBK for the quick id! That explains a whole lot.I must be getting close to the original site.The dates are right also.Very cool! To bad it's so far of a drive to this place.200 miles is far to travel to detect.At least I have something positive this time.Now back to the maps err drawings.....
