Re: What's this for ?

Possibly a large Victorian drapery finial. Finials of 3" or more are not uncommon. Here's one that's 3 1/4" x 1 1/4":

I vote for bedpost knob. My granddaughters are always pulling them off the guest bed and I have to hunt them up and put them back on! Monty

Looks like a brass acron to me. ;D ;D ;D
I tend to go with PBK, because the opening is smooth and a rod would fit into it correctly..And it is light construction..
Then again it could be a brass acorn in disguise. ;D ;D ;D ::)

Re: What's this for ?

It's interesting, my first thought a finial for furniture, but normally the inside would be threaded to screw on to a post of some sort. I'm starting to lean towards the bottle theory. If you look at the second picture, there's a small notch on the lip where the matching lid could fit. Just my 2 cents. Bill

Re: What's this for ?

OK, maybe I'm clear out in left field, but to me it looks like the little vase thing that my wife puts artificial flowers in at her mother's gravesite. It slips into a round eye like holder. Boy, at my age you'd think I'd know the right names for these things. Anyway I think its a very nice find and quite unusual. stan...
