WHAT'S THE USE....

Just got a permit from a state park in NJ and the rules read as follows...

1. limited area (1 beach area only)
2. return all finds to the park ranger (regardless of value)
3. leave behind no garbage (no problem with this)
4. resticted hours (why? am I less of a citizen than beach goers?)

what is the use of detecting to have to give up all your finds and do it at their times.

forget that place.

Re: WHAT'S THE USE....

that is stupid >:( i hate it when they put assinine restrictions on you like that. just say no for cryin out loud. looks like you`d better find a new spot.

Re: WHAT'S THE USE....

Some state parks now are allowing detectors. But say no altering of or misplacement or damage to floral. (grass).
In other words. OK to detect. but not to dig. HH

Re: WHAT'S THE USE....

I guess the NJ law should read:

You MDers won't stop hounding us about hunting our beaches so now you can but have to turn in your finds because that would be stealing and the finds belong to the owners of the beach....and thats us!!! :P

My 2 cents ;D,

Re: WHAT'S THE USE....

In our state, detectorists are lower than dirt.
You probably had to pay extra for the permit too.
If it were me, I'd tell them where they can put their permit.

Re: WHAT'S THE USE....

They need beer money too.............

Re: WHAT'S THE USE....

Your approach is all wrong.

The purpose of a bureaucracy is to grow. A bureaucrat cannot get promoted by performing a job, or cutting costs. You will never hear any government agency declaring "we've accomplished all our goals, now you can abolish us!" On the contrary, they will always say that they can't do their job unless you give them more money, more power.

The only way a bureaucrat can advance his career is by increasing his budget and authority. Therefore, you should offer to scan the beach for unnatural metal refuse and remove same once per month for a fee.

Re: WHAT'S THE USE....

I may be Completly Wrong on this.
It Wouldn't be the First time.

However IS there a possibility, they just want to see
what you found, in case of something being historically
Significant, and that ONCE you turn it in and they look
at it, they turn it over to you ?
I personally would spend a day detecing and take EVERYTHING
I found that day in. EVEN any Gold rings (Except if it's a $30,000.00
one ;) , I'd stick that one on my finger ;D ) I might even
take a JUNK Ring, & a few Indian Heads & Mercs along to salt the Finds
just in case I get Skunked on them. or wanna do a SWAP :P
UNLESS THEY PAT YOU DOWN, Before & After :-\ Any Way, If
after looking at it they say OK, you can have it, You Know you
have a Great place to hunt.

GIVE IT A TRY.
What do you have to Loose ?
Maby $5.00 Worth of Coins, a Few Hours of Finds ;)
To LEARN what the REAL DEAL is :)

Happy Hunting !
Jeff

Re: WHAT'S THE USE....

Like Jeff said. It's worth a shot. And you might even get to be the last thing detected that day. If they don't pat you down. Maybe they'll run a detector over you. HH

Re: WHAT'S THE USE....

Some states are coming around to metal detecting as a good hobby for young and old. Some state parks here in Michigan are restricted to what part of the parks you may detect and some are totally closed thanks to the Archaeologists that think we'll take home an artifact. It's state policy that lost items are to be returned to the "loser," or auctioned off at state property auctions. ( Doubt the ring you turn in ever gets that far.) As for turning stuff in, be sure to give them all the trash you pick up and soon they won't even want to see you coming.

As for permits, I started having our parks issue free permits because of damage to the grounds by slobs that never covered a hole and dug in freshly seeded areas too. This permit thing lets them know who maybe causing damage and I believe it's ok so long as the permit is free. As for restricted hours, some park managers don't want detectorist in the swim area while others are swimming, but restricting them from grounds is just stupid.

Write a letter to your local paper or powers that control the parks dept. BE NICE. ;) ;) ;)
