whats the rarest coin that you ever have in your hands?

mine was a higley copper from a fellow detectorist it appraised around 12 to 20 thousand dollars it was a real treat to hold

A mason jar filled with $20.00 gold pieces when I was in my late 20's. A guy had found it in a house in Charlotte near Myers Park Methodist Church. He'd been given permission to take anything he wanted because they were tearing it down to put in a parking lot the next day. He said he found it behind a panel next to the fireplace. It's been a long time but I can still remember how heavy it was when he handed it to me, like 3 or 4 lbs. He later made an anonymous donation to the church of half the value of the coins, because one of the members had given him the permission to hunt the house and he sort of felt guilty about it. That's a lot of bread... even to the rich folks that live in Myers Park.

Nothing I found. But got to see and hold an 1800 something or another $5 dollar gold piece, afriend of mine eyed and picked up off the top of the ground, on his dads farm in PA when he was a kid.
Then a 1923s Standing lib. quarter my brother found days after he bought his first detector and me showing him how to run it.
So nothing real big. But still cool coins. HH

1856 flying eagle cent. Had a friend who was pretty wealthy and collected coins- had to have one of every one made from the 1856 on up. Paid something like ten grand for it quite a few years ago- he has since passed away. He was a really good guy and korean war veteran. I could be wrong BUT... I do believe it's still in his very cluttered basement. I don't know if his widow has any idea of what his prized penny collection is worth. :-\

Mine was an 1857-s Double Eagle off the SS Central America. It was certified as MS 64 and slabbed by PCGS. My uncle paid something like $9,500 for it. He told me that he left it to me in his will. Great uncle, eh.

Not a coin in the true sense of the word but when the Atoca traveling show came to town, I got to hold one of the gold bars.......... :o

8) 8) An 1834 $5 Gold Piece that a Guy found in Goliad, Tx. I still imagine the possible Historic connections! Wish I would have been there when he found it!

Non-Coin: Atocha Gold Bar @ Fisher's Museum in Key West.

A one-of-a-kind (only one known) Byzantine coin dated ca. 900 A.D. I sold it on ebay cheap.

I used to buy uncleaned ancient coins and clean them as a hobby. I really miss doing that but finding a good supplier today is like trying to find the fountain of youth.

You mean capped bust. :) Nice dime! Mine was a 1889 cc Morgan in MS-60 state. It wasn't mine though. :(

yeah Liberty cap dime - dah! thanks diggummup! :)

Ive got an 1879 CC Morgan dollar that I bought off Ebay, actually the coin is very worn F condition is probably stretching it,I bought it with a few other well worn silver coins for right around melt price, guy listed the auction as scrap silver with a real crappy pic,had no idea it was a CC til it came, its only worth 50 bucks maybe but its a pretty rare coin and I almost feel like I found it.

1914D Wheat, dug June 2006, that I ruined shortly after in my excitement lol. Lessons learned...

I'm pretty sure that my 3 coins are not that rare, but I have a 1723 English half pence, a 1732 English half pence, and a 1774 English half pence.

I didn't dig these coins. I bought them off e-bay, but it is thrilling for me to hold a coin that was in circulation before and during the Revolutionary war.
