Whats the oldest relic you ever found with a MDer??

I started with a home made unit back in about 1959. I've found a slew of coins from the 1800's. I guess the single oldest thing was a Civil War era rifle wrapped in oil cloth that had long since lost its protective ability. That was near Olustee Florida, the site of the only major battle of the war in Florida. The South won that one leaving Tallahassee as the only Southern capital not to fall during the war. I found that in the mid sixties and sold it to a collector. The area is a state park now and treasure hunting of any kind is not allowed. However, there is a pond there that still holds artifacts. People sometimes see a cannon there when water is low.

a pond in a "STATE" and not "NATIONAL" park where you can see a cannon :occasion18: and yet they just leave it in the pond and not unearth it and tell the story behind the relic? and they call themselves "Archaeologist" :tongue3:

P.S. where's my diving suit?? :occasion14:

I never claim to understand what they do, they just do it because they..."are from the gov'mint and there're heah to hep us". Besides, they already have several good cannons in the park.

A hoof pick to remove snow/mud from a horse's hooh, dating to the early 1860's. How do I know it was that time frame? Because my ancestors lived at that site for several years.

Hmmm other than my civil war Minnie balls, I'd say half colonial pewter spoon and door knob lol in WV.
