What's the Most Silver You've Recovered on a Single Hunt?

I know that there are a lot of stories to tell here, and some of them don't get told because they happened in the pre-internet days. I'm just curious to know everyone's personal records, and please please PLEASE include some great stories to make us all drool. Here's mine.

I was at an old logging camp back in 1993 and got a huge overload signal. I dug it out, expecting an old piece of machinery or big junk and ended up flipping a Morgan Dollar out of the hole! When I rechecked the hole I was stunned--there was another signal there. When I removed the dirt I saw a BIG reeded edge! A Barber Half! I also dug an 1853 Seated Half and an 1854 Half Dime that day. I pounded it to death over the next couple of months, finding some nice silver in the process. I never have beaten that total of $2.05 face value in one hunt though.

Regards,

Although I don't have much to show, I came here to check it out as I love reading the stories & looking at the pictures of the finds.

Gypsy - I went to the link that you provided and read your story. I was so excited for you. The way you presented it made me feel like I was there. Great story!!! Needless to say your finds were excellent as well.

Have you ever been back to that place to dig around more?

My buddy, Ed, once found 6 Morgan dollars, 3 Seated halves, and 3 Seated half dimes from one hole. These were found in 1960 in a town park. He told me that he had pulled out 48 silver coins and 102 Indian Heads that same day. His silver total for that year was around 2,500. Now, that is what the 60s was all about, dudes! He is still detecting today. His 2006 silver count was 456. He already has 45 silver coins this year! I told him to join this forum, but he is too shy. :D

I know a guy in La Grande, Oregon who detected a cache ( previously suspected to exist with good qualifiers ) on an old home site that he bought. He is still selling some of it off & I have handeled some of it. He has amazing photos but he is quite secretive about it. 2800 Morgan & Peace Dollars in an old leather satchel. There were however, no really rare ones in the lot.

I know this sounds far fetched but back around 1980 or so they drained the swimming hole at Big Ridge State Park in east Tennessee to repair the dam. I was lucky enough to find out about it from a good friend. I waded out through almost hip deep mud to get through the creek channel and the mud was only about knee deep out at the raft that was sitting in the mud. The park was built in the 30's. I found 21 silver halves, 48 silver quarters and almost a hundred silver dimes that day. I also found 6 gold rings. I never counted the face value in newer money but it was a haul. I checked with them a few weeks ago and they now say you can't hunt in state parks. I also found a cache of around 55 wheat cents in a friends yard one time. the newest cent was 1953 I think.

Re: What's the Most Silver You've Recovered on a Single Hunt?

This is not a metal detecting story, but a neat silver one! I figured I would tell it here real quick.

My step father was a foreman for a construction company in CT. Well, back in the 80's, his company got the job to remove the old toll booths from the Merrit Parkway ( I think it was the Merritt, going from memory ).

Well, when they lifted the first booth, because the state wanted to keep them for some reason, he said that coins were falling out of the bottom of the booth like a slot machine!!! He said there were so many coins you could not believe it! Most of them were pre-50's as well! I think the booths were built in the 40's.

He said that he never saw his men work so hard..... to FILL THEIR WINTER HATS WITH COINS!!!! After looking closer, they noticed that from under the booth you could see that the original floor was just wooden boards with 1/4 inch spaces. There was a more current flooring over it, but, they were guessing that they must of went years with coins falling through the cracks. He said that his guys literally had their hats full and he did not get me a SINGLE coin!!!! He gave me some story about how his guys really did work hard and they deserved it ( plus I was pretty young at the time ). In hind-sight I can appreciate that. He did give me a roll of very old canadian dimes about a year later, so I forgave him ;)

Anyway, did not mean to get off the topic here, I just read the poll and it made me think of that story.

Re: What's the Most Silver You've Recovered on a Single Hunt?

A few years back my wife and I got permission to hunt a private camp. I think we were there all but an hour or two finding modern clad etc. We hit and area and must have found 20-30 merc dimes all within 10-12 feet. Talking to an old timer about the area he said he seems to remember they would always have the change scramble for the kids in that same area. I need to get back there been way to long.

My best to date is 7 silver coins.... one quarter and 6 dimes.... totaling a whopping 85 cents, woo hoo! haha

My next best day was 75 cents, a walker and a quarter.

Then 70 cents after that... a walker and 2 dimes.

New here and don't really like to post cause camera is not working, but in 1989 I was at an old house place and remembered my dad telling me to be sure to check chiminey's and fireplaces, well didn't finding anything in the rock but about 2 foot from the rock I had a loud signal that didn't make any sense. I got a old axe head and pryed up the wood and found a prince albert tobacco can with 3 barbers, 1 lib quarter and 4 indian head pennys and a ton of tax tokens.... that's about the most exciting... other than that a few rosies here and there and a merc just the other day.(with a borrowed detector) :D

Re: What's the Most Silver You've Recovered on a Single Hunt?

I like these kind of post,,, good idea....
Mine was $2.50 when I found my cache find. It was a ponds cold cream jar with ( 8 ) pieces of silver. There were (2) half dollars, and (6) Quarters. I still remember the rush I had as the silver hit the ground. ;D

Here's the link to the post if you haven't seen it: Cache Find
Other than the cache I think it was a maximum of three coins, a quarter, and (2) dimes.
Good luck, & Happy hunting~

Re: What's the Most Silver You've Recovered on a Single Hunt?

My father worked in a junk yard pulling parts for a while when I was about 12. He took me with him to work a lot, nearly every day that summer. At first I hated it. It was nasty, stinky, hot and there was nothing to do. I got smart after the first few days and started digging around to keep busy. This was in the mid 70's so I would imagine the cars in the junk yard were at least 8 or so years old. I used to go through the old cars and find all sorts of things in the trunks, under the seats (front and rear), under the carpet and in the hoses that went from the heater blower to the dash vents. I found tons of change (mostly silver but some clad), jewelry, paper money, toys, pocket knifes, fishing stuff, even a big bag of pot one time, well you get the idea, it was fun. I must have found at least 90-100 dollars worth of silver change that summer and spent it all on goodies. At the time, I didn't realize it but I had gone through the first step of instilling treasure hunting in my blood, I think this is what hooked me for life. My childhood friends were not nice that summer, they called it scroungy and teased me until it came time for me to spend my money on them. I wonder how I would feel about treasure hunting today if I had never gone with my dad that summer, it was optional but dad wanted me to go. I wouldn't trade that summer full of memories for anything. I still remember how excited I would get when the work day ended and I got to show dad my finds for the day. Dad never took anything I found, (except for the bag of pot) He'd say, little bassturd, you did better than me again today. I wasn't wealthy growing up but I do have rich memories.

Love ya dad.

Re: What's the Most Silver You've Recovered on a Single Hunt?

I really can't remember the best day I had recovering Silver, but my partner and I didn't do to bad this
past year at our Happy Trails site and it is still giving up silver.

I am posting some of the coins we have dug out of this site last year. I just posted some of finds from this site that we dug Jan. 4, 2007. (Happy Trails still giving up Good coins, (Gold Baby Ring)

I can't even come close to some of the finds that have been posted on here, but then I didn't start detecting until 1983. Wish I would have had a detector back in 1960. Heck I was a paperboy back then and had that much silver in my pockets every week. LOL, If we had only known!
