almost looks like the heel to a shoe, but i doubt thats what it would be.where did you find it?

It was found at an old house site around early 1900s.

How big is it? Looks sort of like the hardware for the end of a leather strap or flap, with a stud to be snapped into a metal fitting on a box, trunk, case, etc.

I agree,the back look's like it's been crimped into leather with some kinda hook in the front.

Don't know what it is, but I've found a bunch of them at a turn of the century site. They lock on quarter and get me all excited each time I dig one.

It's the backing plate from a more modern belt tip. It would go on the back of the belt tip and the tabs hug the sides, the post sticks throught the leather and is kind of like a rivet that holds the front of the belt tip on without having any exposed means of being fixed to the leather tip.
