You don't say where you are. That makes a difference.

It looks like they all started out round but changed due to ground action. Happens.

thanks for the link, this one must be a die variety note the dots on top full round to oval right to left.
the one in the link the dots are all rnd. if the pix they have are a copy this one must be very rare?
There are different variation of these buttons. As far as I know no one knows the exact use of the button but they are beleived to be patriotic. They date Rev war or just after and were all made by the French as far as I know. I dug a more common variety, stars and stripes with the snake around the edge of the button and got $200 for it years ago. So they are rare and valuable.

Re: what's it's value

Except for the snake, it is the same style as many patriotic buttons of the Whig party. Albert does not list this variety which might suggest it is rare. You'll probably regret it someday if you sell it.

I've been messing with this stuff for a long time and have never seen one like that. I couldn't find it in any of the books I have either. I had to sell mine ( along with most everything else) otherwise I would still have it.

Or, you'll welcome it now because you need the cash! ;D

I used to never sell anything. I gave tons of stuff away but wouldn't sell it. I waited until I didn't have a choice. It was hard but necessary. I had been digging for about 20 years and had not sold a thing. The one thing I do regret is not getting good pics of everything. I had a lot of rare once in a lifetime finds that I wish I had pictures of now.

Re: what's it's value

Now that is a nice button! I'm sure well into the hundreds and $1,000 wouldn't surprise me if it's one of the scarcer types. I'd need more than that to part with it though.

I'd take my time selling this and make sure the price is fair.

PS... If it's not a known pattern there's a chance it could be French. Does the back have a regular type shank?

Yeah not having pictures bites but as for selling the stuff you did what you had to do, and there's more important things in life than metal. I've sold a fair amount over the last ten years, mostly junk, but some quality stuff too. Would I like it back, sure I'd love to have every single thing... even the junk! But would I trade back to the tougher times to have the stuff, and quite possibly still be stuck in them... not for a second! I don't sweat anything that's gone now because it was always the "big one" I've been looking for and haven't found it yet. Now if I do hit it, I still might sell it, but man it will be a sweet day.

Re: what's it's value

Good advice Iron Patch. I too have sold things I wish I had now, but you can't go back. As a matter of fact, I'm trying to buy back a musket (non-dug) I sold years ago. I know how you feel VaYank about having pics because alot of the antiques I've sold were waaaay before this digital camera age. I've never seen a Brinks truck in a funeral processional, so buy/sell/spend and enjoy life. Breezie

Probably not a good idea to sell something you don't know the value of. Hope you didn't lose too many hundreds.

(I just noticed the post about with the picture, and that the button is French. I think you probably got a fair price)
