Somebody in Canada posted something similar a while back, and it wasn't you!!! LOL I have no idea what it is, although it looks handmade to me. The X looks deliberate. The herring bone effect may be from something as accidental as being skuffed by a rock as a deer or person stepped on it. PBK may know. Where is he anyway????

that is more than likely a toy or trinket called a whizzer, or a spinner. A peice of sinew was put through the middle, looped through again and tied together. They would wind the string up and when the loops were pulled on the middle thingy would spin, and would wind itself back up while releasing pressure on the loops and pulling them again. hope that is clear enough to understand.

Hmmm, I always saw those toys with two holes, rather than one. A large two-hole button always made good ones. This thing has only one hole from what I see.

Are you sure, Relic, that it's a lead trade token?

I agree TT, would need two holes to be a "whizzer". Man... they were trading in lead? So guy's would have been trading bullets for beans!

I think it's a game piece of some sort...

Interesting idea MJ.

I know someone else found one of these whatzits recently. I don't know who...maybe romeo-1? Anyhow, it looked quite similar, although a little rougher around the edge. Whatever they were, they seem unlikely as trade tokens, IMO, because there is nothing to indicate the value or the issuer. But I'm certainly not an expert by a long shot. I'm merely tossing in my guesses--kind of like thinking out loud

From a UK perspective, this is not a trade lead token. See examples:

http://home.hetnet.nl/~jekkie/lood/armen/Engelse loden tokens.html

I have found over 100 & although some have holes in them, they tended to be a later additions.

Most lead tokens have a moulded design on at least 1 side & normally both sides. Your design seems to be added later & because the hole is in the middle, I think it was either on a stick/rod or a weight.

Not really sure on use but 99% sure not token.

Hello there thnx for all the output

It was someone on here along time ago that said it was a lead trade token. As I said it was found with indian artifacts in the area. Montana Jim seems to be on the right track, like the drawing you made, makes perfect sense. I could see an indian making such an item. The X and harring bone design are not accidental markings and are also widely used in indian artifacts especially pottery. Great site thanks for all the help. Is there an indian artifact spot on this site. If your into inian stuff try a site called thetreasuredepot. 8)

I've found many round, and square lead items with different types and shapes of holes in them. Most of mine were weights, like hem weights and such. Most of mine have a split hole in them though(for sewing them in). Good Luck, Mike(Iowa).
