Whats is a Ox Knob?

Re: What's is a Ox Knob?

Ox knobs are devices that are slipped over the ends of cows' horns that are blunt on the end, or have a rounded bulb on the end. There are screw holes in them that allow a couple of screws to hold them in place. They are used to keep the horns from goring a person.... or other cattle, I guess. Here's a pic of one I found on another forum...... interesting item.

For What Its Worth -- When was the last time you were out in farm field with mean cow/ox?

http://www.ruralheritage.com/messageboard/frontporch/9514.htm

Brass/ball horn covers oxenstore.com

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what those metal balls are called that some folks
put on their oxen's horns. I've search the internet for over an hour and can't find a thing!
I looked at Berrybrook Ox Supply,... oxenstore.com where they call them horn knobs. They also
sell horn weights and all kinds of great stuff for oxen people.
They are called horn knobs, ox knobs or any of several names depending on who you talk to.
I agree--not much on the internet. Very seldom seen on eBay. There are at least two stores
here in Maine that carry them along with Scrutons Ox Supply in New Hampshire.
A search on Google for "oxen horn knobs" turned up this likely culprit.
Horn knobs or balls: oxenstore.com -- Try searching for horn knobs.

Nobs or Nubs. Older ones were cast, and threaded or not. Some had a hole straight through.
You cut off whatever horn stuck out through. Newer ones are lathed. Threaded with tapered or
stepped threads. Some have lead, or rhinestone inserted in the tips.

Re: What's is a Ox Knob?

BigCypress found the right one.

Here's a picture from another forum that shows a few different ones. They slid it over the horn, screwed it down, and cut off the excess horn flush with the knob.

Re: What's is a Ox Knob?

Out here is South Dakota and Wyoming - everytime you go to feed the cows, you are in mortal danger. Polled is always preferred, but, it just doesn't happen that way.

The cows with calves will kill you on the spot, and the bulls are usually not too bad, unless its breeding time, and someone is in heat - then your life is in peril also.

Of course, just the act of dropping feed in, results in the massive hoards of cattle, anywhere from 40-140 at one time, will get you gored, stepped on, shoved and pushed, just while you are dumping the feed in - and THAT is every day.

Yep, here in the west - the deer are tame and the cattle are wild. You have to tap the deer with your pickup to get them out of the way, but it takes you 5 hours to catch a cow. (of course, you have to understand, the only time cattle are "touched" , they are either getting shots, branded, castrated or treated for something.) So, the real answer to "when was the last time"? Yesterday.

Re: What's is a Ox Knob?

I think kuger has it right. It's the ball end off of a hames- a pair of curved metal (or sometimes wooden) pieces lying on the horse collar of a horse harness, taking the pull from the traces.

I know. I was referring to muncle. NOT you kuger. You have nothing to be sorry for. It appears he responded to the wrong question. 8)

The question was "what is an ox knob." It had already been answered with pics several times and the Hames pic had already been corrected several times by both of us..

Sometimes we try to over-explain something where its not really necessary.(muncle and me) Possibly my bad. :dontknow:
