Whats going on with this nickel?

Just picked up a few rolls of nickels and the most interesting thing I found was this 2000 P. The face is very recessed and the top half of the coin appears to have been compressed for lack of a better word. My best guess would be half of a magicians coin, but I don't have any experience with those to know if this is what to expect from one that has been separated. I tried to get a good picture of it, hopefully it helps.

I think it,s what's called a Rail Road the coin was not in the collar all the way when struck. Nice find. LP

there's another coin forum that states this is a rail road error. NO dryer did this dryer coins are beat down
evenly across the rim.

I think mr.landpirate has it. A railroad rim, more commonly known as a partial collar. A bit hard to tell from the pics, I thought dryer coin at first, too, but it seems like the rim only flares out on one side of the coin.

After looking at more partial collar errors that is definitely what is going on with this coin. Nice to find something interesting like this with just a three roll hunt. Is there any type of value in this type of error or is a more common thing? Either way it's worth more to me in hand than some fleeting paper money.

Interesting find KTB. Not saying that it is or isn't, but how would a dryer do this to a nickel?

ktb615 that's an interesting nickel regardless of what caused it to get that way. Congrats on you interesting find.

enamal7 I would also be considered and old timer too. I think that as we get older we tend to get a lot more black or white and we tend to say what's on our mind without regard for other's feelings (at least that what my wife tells me). I am sure you did not mean to be abrupt or rude but your comment did come off that way. When Mr.Landpirate posted he said that he thinks that the nickel is called a railroad based upon another post that he had seen. He did not say it was definitely one only that it was his opinion that it might be one. I think if you go back and re-read the post you will see my point. I also think that you might also see how your comment could be considered rude and argumentative. I have to watch my tongue all the time so please don't take this as an insult to you and only an observation. As far as Mr.Landpirate's respone to your post in my opinion it was also a little over the top. We all just need to think a little before we open our mouths and in this case before we post.

KTB, at its widest diameter, is your nickel wider than a standard nickel? If so, I would think that would rule out it being a dryer coin. Can we get a pic of the reverse?

This nickel is tearing us apart!

It was tearing us apart, but now it never happened...

Oh wait, there's still proof that something happened here!

What, I finally weigh in on this politely and my post gets deleted?

My post was basically the same as Pescadore's, and yet his remains and mine is deleted. I think enamal should post more because he has a breadth of knowledge that one can only have after years of touching coins. He just needs to do it in a nicer way, and all will be right in the world - the wise provide wisdom, the young can be dumb and ask questions without fear of repercussion, and mods won't needlessly delete posts.

I am sorry if I came across argumentative. I didn't intend it that way. I will no longer post in the crh forum. I'll be around though. If you would like my opinion on anything you find just drop me a pm. Again I apologize.

I'm at work but as soon as I get home I'll do some measurements and take a photo of the reverse.

The reverse is roughly the same size as a normal nickel. I wouldn't say it is bigger. I am including a picture of the reverse as well as a side view with the reverse on top.

Gentlemen, i highly recommend you do not repeat what happen here again.

We will NOT go quietly into the night!

Interesting find KTB. Not saying that it is or isn't, but how would a dryer do this to a nickel?

I too would like an explanation mountainman. I've been around metal working in some shape, form, or fashion for 28 years. Would like someone to fill me in on this process of a dryer doing this perfect raised rim or worn away ring???

There is a good explanation on a respectable coin forum where the members have productive dialog almost exclusively about coins and without belittling each other over things like semantics and sharing theories. (Removed By Moderator)
