How about a pistol barrel to go with it! 6 days ago i was hunting an area i recently got permission for and i believed i found a bayonet. I believed this area was once a Second Seminole War fort that was burned by indians in 1839. Well, my hunch paid off. BIG TIME! I found a couple musket balls, a WW I US army service button and some other odds and ends in the first week or so of hunting there. After a lot of electrolysis i am finally able to conclude that it is a bayonet. I asked a master blacksmith whom i know if it was a bayonet or not and he said yes! I was thrilled. (I know there will be nay sayers because its so deteriorated, but of well.) Four days later i was able to hunt again. (Oct 2nd) i found some iron which i thought was all just garbage. Well, today (Oct 4th) i decided to clean up the artifacts from the hunt. When i saw the pipe object i didnt want to get my hopes up, but they still did. As i was cleaning the wet mud off a octagonal shape emerged and my jaw dropped.

I'll post more pics later of both the bayonet and pistol when they're done with electrolysis.

here you can see the classic groove in the bayonet which allowed air to flow into the wound to prevent suction when the soldier went to pull the bayonet out of his victim. pic 2 shows where the bayonet socket snapped off.

i went back today and found another bayonet! Its also pretty rotten but its a BAYONET!

Thanks guys!

Wow! Impressive! You might even want to use a sifter there. Great finds!

Nice digs.

thanks!

I would like to, but that place is literally a swamp and the mud would be impossible to sift. If it was more dry maybe i'd attempt it. I've sifted a ton at my house which has yielded an incredible amount of ceramics and other artifacts.

Here's a couple overlay pics to show how much the bayonet is deteriorated. This bayonet i drew was 18 inches. Its impossible to say for sure how long this one actually was.
