Whats a Shilling?

Re: What's a Shilling?

Hi--Trying to come up with an equivalent between the US and British monetary system is like comparing "apples and oranges".? There were 12 British pence to a shilling, and 20 shillings to a Pound.? Tossed into the mixture was the florin, which was equal to 2 shillings.? The British system also used half pennies and farthings (a quarter of a pence) to make small change. To really find the equivalent in US money, you would have to figure the exchange rate at the time your shilling was made.

The British penny (plural = pence) gave the nickname "penny" to the US cent, but they were not at all the same value.

Re: What's a Shilling?

1320, now you know why the pilgims left England. They came here and minted the various shillings such as Oak and Pine. Then came the Large Cent, 1/2 cent, small cent, 2 cent, 3 cent silver, 3 cent nickle, 5 cent nickle, 1/2 dime, dime, 20 cent piece, quarter, half, dollar. So if you're in my neck of the woods, please throw them all back. HEHE ;D HH anyway,
