What's A Cowbell Doing In The Middle Of The Woods?

obviously This isn't The Holy Grail but my best find was a Cowbell I'll explain

2 years ago I think I was out metal Detecting in the woods next to my house and i was doubting I'd find anything good cause I've had my metal detector for 7 years and I have never found anything like some of the coins of jewelry that other people on the board has found just tools and junk. I was getting ready to quit when the detector beeped so I started digging when it wasn't very far down I remember the shovel it the object so I brushed some dirt from it and instantly I didn't know what it was i had only uncovered a small piece of it so when i finally got the thing out it was full of dirt when i got the dirt out I saw the ringer and immediately said " What's a cowbell doing in the middle of the woods?" I thought my one of my neighbors had made it and accidentally left it there. I showed it to my grandfather and he was amazed as well he said it could have over 100 years old because when my family first moved to the property it was nothing but woods all around we guessed it might have been a pasture at one time long ago Cause I've dug up barbed wire too. for months afterwards whenever I'd go back to that spot i could just imagine a caw standing there eating grass. an insignificant find to some but to me it's my greatest find ever.

When you come up with more ideas about how that cowbell got there, and follow those ideas up with research and detecting, you'll reap the rewards in terms of finds.  Hit the books

Congrats on your find--I'd love to see a photo.

I can think of 3 reasons.

there was a field there in the past.

cows get away. One got lost & Broke the bell harness on a limb.

Some kid had it & lost it.

Hopefully you live in an 19th. century Field

Ah, but if you hung it up in a tree, and it fell down, and you weren't around, would it make a sound? Out of work right now, plenty of time to respond in this way. My apologies,

Those woods certainly could be growing where a field once existed. The pieces of barbed wire you've found there sure supports that idea. But, there is also the possibility that a cow wandered into those woods and lost its bell. Cows are very curious animals and will go into any areas they can fit to. It's not unusual for a cow to "explore" a wooded area, get turned around and become lost. That's when they start bellowing for rescue. ;D It does happen. When they start bellowing and the farmer or a family member hears it and starts calling back; the cow will move to the sound of the human; unless it's physically trapped. At which time, the cow will actually keep bellowing until it is found.

I know that that explanation was kinda long, but the info will probably be "new" to some members and bits of information is what all detectorists live by. :icon_study:

A cow's curiousity can involve you when you least expect it. Here's the high points of a personal experience.

---detecting a section of field behind old barn. (using headphones, of course)
---cow sees me, I don't see cow. (cow was behind me over in field)
---cow is curious of human doing something unfamiliar to it.
---cow strolls over to learn a new hobby.
---I don't see or hear cow coming.
---cow butts me in back as to say "hello".
---I scream "S---T" in very high volume accompanied with high octave.
---cow has curious look in her eyes as to say, " WHAT'SUP"?
---farmer almost has cardiac arrest from laughing.
---I learn cow's curiosity can be a killer. ::)

Re: What's A Cowbell Doing In The Middle Of The Woods?

Woods is what cow bells were invented for. If you have a wide open pasture you have no problems seeing your cow when you want to go get it to milk. However back in the good ol' days woods had to be cleared by hand so one didn't waste one's time clearing land for a cow pasture. You turned your cow loose in the woods with a bell on it. When you wanted it you went off to the woods and listened for the bell. They also made turkey bells and goose bells.

And don't forget, "....rings on her fingers, and bells on her toes, and a bone in her nose; ho ho!"
