Found these items on a spur of the moment hunt in the park. The one piece appears to be a long bolt. The other. Well, it must be a machine part, but what? Worlds largest cotter pin? I ground it off so that it would show up better in the pic. Don't understand why I even found them because iron was disc. out.

It sort of looks like part of a old pin type hinge I have seen a old school blacksmith make on tv.

The large "hairpin" looks to be like something that was used on the railroad. did you find this near any RR tracks. I've removed several of these from ties when I've had to work on a section of track. It was driven thru the outer hole on a tie plate into the tie. It was just another form of fastner like the RR spike.
That's my best guess..... :-\

i have seen cotter keys that big on heavy equipment, cat , jd etc...

Seems to me that I have seen rail plates being retained by a similar looking spike. Currently no rails within several miles. The area has been in use since G. Washington's time. There could easily have been a set of tracks thru the area at some point.
The other pin could have come from a large hinge. Maybe a gate of some sort. Good ideas, guys.
