"War Nickels (the only silver nickels in recent history) made between 1942-1945. They were minted in Silver because the metal Nickel was needed for World War II. They were made of 35% silver and about 57% copper. These silver coins are worth more relative to their face vlaue than any other US Minted coin today."

..."Value: As a rough estimate of this coins value you can assume this coin in poor condition will be valued at somewhere around $1.75, while one in "perfect" condition can bring $59. This price does not reference any standard coin grading scale. So when we say poor, we mean worn more than would be expected from a coin in this age, and perfect meaning it looks "perfect" without flaw and possibly even certified.

Additional Info: There are D over Horizontal D mint marks for this year, and they are worth up to a grand ($1000) Wartime nickels were issued in 35% silver from 1942-1945 as Nickel was a resource needed for the World War II. These Nickels are usually ugly and grimy but a great way to stock up on silver at near spot or under.

Numismatic vs Intrinsic Value: This coin in poor condition is still worth $0.61 more than the intrinsic value from silver content of $1.14, this coin is thus more valuable to a collector than to a silver bug. Coins worth more to a collectors may be a better long term investment. If the metal prices drop you will still have a coin that a numismatic would want to buy.
