Being made of brass and thin, I think it is the Ferrel of a paint brush lost by
an artist doing seascapes. The small groove holds it to the handle and the end
is flattened as it held the bristles.

I think you are correct being a Ferrel for a paint brush. Thanks for solving this and I never would have guessed that one. roger :thumbsup:
