My CRH is getting slow now,as I broke my knee and can't travel a lot. I've been browsing the auction stuff, looking for hot deals. I'm not a collector, just looking for cheap silver.Granted, its cheaper and more fun to pay face for a 90,but what if you were at a coin show,or an auction site? Would you pay half melt for junk silver? What is the break point to make it a decent deal?

I bid alot on E-Bay. 1961 - 1964 Proof Sets. I always know what melt is on each set on the day I place my bid. My bid also includes shipping charges. I literally bid on 100's of proof sets each week. Some fall through the cracks and I get them at a rediculous price.

For example, melt on a 63 Proof Set is roughly 18.00 depending on silver spot. The example was when silver was 29.92. I picked up
1961, 1962, 1963 and a 1964 proof set, 4 sets in the auction) for $49.92 + 5.00. Figured I came out way ahead on that deal.
You just have to pick a price and once you are outbid, you never go back and re-bid, you just let it go and look for more.

One time I bought a 1960 proof set and it was small date material, seller had no idea what he had. Tucked that set right next to the regular 1960. That set alone was 27 or so dollars at most coin shoppes.

Happy hunting.

I've been buying rolls of 90% halves from time to time, I find it very difficult to find them below melt. Must be my area, I've watched Craigslist for example, and everything is above melt. I've been doing this for several years, and have yet to come across any really good deals. I know that others have had some luck. ffd

Since I'm not a collector,I just want it to be something I can recognize, proof or not! My current plan is to bid 10x face value, including shipping. No point paying more when they want more to ship it than melt alone!

If you get some 90% silver at 10X cfacve, take it. take it ALL. But, expect most people will be well above that.

In fact, I'd say take ALL the silver you can get at up to 17X face value. Shoot, if you have limited funds you can always sell it at 19X face on BDirect and free up your money WITH some profit. But I'd take all I can get at 17X face. And some of that may fall through the cracks and sell at 15X face, or 13X face, and some maybe even at your 10X face. Don't pass those up, but take the higher ones TOO. It will give you more profits that you can use on the 10X face stuff you find.

(And if you want to sell some at a profit, but don't know how, shoot, PM me and I'll STILL buy them from you at 17X face. So if you get something at 15X face and decide to pass becuase it is not 10X face, buy it anyway, sell it to me, make some profit, get your money back, and then keep looking for your 10X face stuff. Just to show you how easy it is to sell at a profit even the stuff you buy for more than 10X face) :-)

When I have spare cash I'll spend up to melt value when I'm buying junk silver. After all, buying it from a coin or precious metal store is going to cost more.

I like to pay 10x face as I'm not so sure this recent rally has legs but as you can see from the rest of the posts - buy it up to 17x face and look for numismatic valued coins and sell the rest at cost. There are people here who will take it for the same price and you can cherry pick! :icon_thumright:

This recent price drop may also be a good time to look at some of your reputable silver buyers for junk silver lots. If you think prices will head back up in the spring as they usually do then you score. They have been buying it so fast that they have bags and bags of silver coins that are just run through the coin counter and bagged. They usually sell for a slight premium and you can score an occasional treasure. Also a good place to buy used Dansco Folders
