The small horizontal bar has name etched "WM Michaels" wording on plaque under etched name is
"IN U.S. SERVICE FROM THIS HOME"
Placque is bronze approx 5 in tall x 4 in wide, no markings on back, has 3 screw holes for display/mounting.

I'm guessing WWII but don't know why? I do remember g'ma saying that each home with a soldier at war had some kind of plaque displayed on the front door. She had six boys in WWII and they all came home. Some kind of a record. Monty

re: why am I calling this a plaque?

from wiki:
Commemorative plaque, a flat ornamental plate or tablet fixed to a wall, used to mark a significant event, person, etc.
Memorial Plaque, issued to next-of-kin of dead British military personnel after World War

thanks

This wasn't as easy as I thought it would be :D Nothing jumped out at me right away in the military records. Might this family/farm have been indexed as in Romine, Marion County, Il in the census records?

I'm finding a bunch of Michael(s) there.

That is possible, but from what I have been told he always lived in Rome Township of Jefferson County, Illinois
No known relatives.

thanks

I wanted to get back to you - but I don't have anything solid yet. Here is the family in the 1910 census:

William H Michael
Age in 1910: 52
Estimated birth year: abt 1858
Birthplace: Indiana
Relation to Head of House: Head
Father's Birth Place: Virginia
Mother's Birth Place: Ohio
Home in 1910: Rome, Jefferson, Illinois
Marital Status: Widowed
Race: White
Gender: Male
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
William H Michael 52
Lila M Michael 24
William M Michael 13
Roy Walker 25
Jessie Walker 27
Cecil Walker 5
Opal Walker 3

So it appears he has a son William M Michael(s) who would be of the right age to serve in WWI but I haven't found any service records/draft card for him yet.
