I’m a newbie and have decided that I’m going to go out and find (never have found any) some arrow heads, spear heads, frankly any artifacts.

I’m in North East Kansas now so I’m assuming I should be looking for flint points ?

What other material types should I be watching for?

Thnx,
Spot

2nd - If no one can help ya on this forum - you might consider posting your request on Forum: Kansas for more exposure...

There’s glacial deposits in ne Kansas so you may find some quartzite objects as well as flint. Maybe some plate chalcedony from the flint hills

Don't just look for colors look for shapes also. Around my area most of the points are quartz(white) and people get hung up on looking for white. They sometimes walk right over the colored odd points.

Thanks VP - I missed that there is a Kansas forum... I’ll check that out.

It’s pretty apparent I don’t even know what I’m looking for, but a guy has to start somewhere - thanks for the tips on shapes & colors.

I hunt so I’ll be combining hunting and point hunting - I also have a half way decent metal detector but I’m really wanting to find my first arrow head.

Thanks,
Spot

I echo what Tony said and also look at points and tools from your state and neighboring states on youtube and anywhere else you can see examples. Most have basically the same shape wherever you live.
After a rain is the best time also, even if you have searched an area before, and I usually pick up around 200 or 300 nothings before ever finding something that is something, so don't give up and RELAX and take your time. Welcome and have fun.

Flint Hills chert, Niobrara Jasper, Permian Chert. Pretty much everything in this case covers it. These were found just to the north near the KS-NE boarder.C401009F-5936-498B-A205-235FCC44A97A.jpeg

Welcome to Tnet . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .:hello:

Thanks...

One thing I need to find is a good reference on what to call the things I find..

Everyone seems to know the names of some classification or material or type of artifact... I’m a complete blanks slate here so I need to figure out what the heck I just found, so I’m hoping you guys can also direct me to a good book / reference for that as well.

Hey Spot, welcome. I’m new at this too and was referred to a great book, “The Official Overstreet Indian Arrowheads Identification and Price Guide”. I just bought the 15th Edition (2018), and it is very helpful with the ID by region of the country. Around $33, you might find it cheaper by shopping around. I have several other books that are specific to Texas, you might find one specific to Kansas. I used to live in Liberal (SW Kansas), wish I knew then what I know now!
