What type of tool or knife is this?

Found this at a Civil War camp but also had an old homestead could possibly be more modern. Is this some type of knife, chisel or weapon? The implement is approx 10 inches long by 1 1/2 inches wide by 1/4 inch thick on the blade. The butt end is hollowed out as if it were mounted on the end of a stick or something. Made entirely out of iron.

Old chisel, or wood lathe tool?

Its a 'Timber Framing Chisel'...still in use today...

I happen to have several dating to the mid-1800's and are used quite frequently...

It's hollow. The wooden handle was in there.
