I just happened to walk upon this rock the other day & it caught my eye glinting in the sun

Here is a pic of one side....

This one is as 'close-up' as i can get of the weird stuff on it... which i can't figure out what it is... maybe rust? I washed it off so i don't think its dirt? Actually I'm a total newb to minerals/rocks/treasure hunting etc. so i'm not even sure what kind of rock it is... I thought it might be quartz?

Thanks guys! And thanks for having me... i just registered today :hello:

Ant say it looks like a potato shaped host rock with an incursion of quartz and iron.

So when you blow up the picture to full resolution the yellow/gold colored stuff is Iron?

33i, please don't blow up the picture. We like looking at it.:laughing9:

I see the dark spots as galena (lead ore), and may be some iron leaching on the granite stone, might even be some gold sulfide leaching. I can tell you that your stone is associated with gold, meaning that you might be able to find gold in the area that your stone originated from. If was looking for gold I would look for decomposed granite ledges and outcroppings in the area.

You can also use a 10x magnifier to see if you can see any right angles like a piece of glidder has, then poke the suspect sample with a needle. We know gold doesn't have right angles and it is malleabe and won't flake or cracked when probed with a neddle.
