What type of motor?

I Was out and about this past weekend on the atv and found this big motor in the middle of the road right by a old abandon mine. I was wondering what it was used for? It had 4 cyliders all together. 2 were large cylinder and the other 2 were small. The motor was very heavy and big, About 3ft wide. My partner thought maybe a old air compressor? Ding Ding Ding! Very early 2 stage air compressor engine. The larger cylinders are compressed into the smaller cylinders which would then be stored in a tank or used directly Was probably driven with a belt off the rear axel of a model T Ford!

It would make sense that an old air compressor was found next to a mine.
They probably used it to pump fresh air down into the abyss!

Thanks for the replies, and yes the that would make sense. Also someone took the side panels off the block at one time to look inside, 2 of the rods were bent. Would be cool to tip it back up right into its old working position, And get more pictures.

Being a two stage it would have been for pressure not volume. It probably ran drills, jack hammers, etc.

Isn't this just the engine for the compressor?,which provides its own power, rather than needing to be belt driven?
Here's another model from the same company, Consolodated Pneumatic Tool Co.: IMG_0011.JPG
The company initials CPT are at the top of the radiator support.

I'd at first thought that the above ad made a mistake, noting the CP logo on the side of the compressor unit, which looks just like the Chicago Pneumatic logo, except apparently their's is in a circle, where this one isn't: IMG_0012.JPG

Since it has two large and two small pistons and the cylinders have cooling fins this would be the driven compressor. The engine in the picture looks like a Continental with direct drive.

The two big pipes are for the intake, they go to the low pressure side. The big pistons force the air into the small cylinders where it is compressed even more. (thus the two stages)The small pipes are the outlet to the air tank or tools. The large pulley on the side is where it is driven by an engine.

A low pressure compressor would be used for tools. Most pneumatic tools operate at 80 psi and need a high volume of air. Same with breathing air only it would have to be lubricated with a food grade oil. Nice find!
