Hello, found this in the lake the other day. It has had activity for several hundred years. It's made of brass and the large strap has a heart on the end of the bar. It does not appear to be stamped. The shore has been home to early trading activity to modern day. I have found musket balls to memorials on this site in Michigan.

Is it made of iron? Interesting find, Breezie

Re: What type of buckle?

I'm thinking its --horse tack -the heart went thru a slit in the leather to hold the strap at the proper spot --

Re: What type of buckle?

I don't think it's horse tack, too fragile for that (I can snap it in half if I wanted too)

Re: What type of buckle?

for a non heavy stress point --non weight bearing --heart designs are quite common on horse tack --folks just "love" their horses. --my guess would be 1800's - say 1850 to early 1900's (pre car era)

if its too light / delicate to be horse tack related then a brass victorian era ( 1850 ish to early 1900 era again) sash / waist belt buckle ( worn only for "dress" function really -- so its not weight bearing in any way ) might be the answer

Re: What type of buckle?

I would agree with you on sash buckle, but they are usually more ornate and I cannot for the life of me figure out why there are 2 bars, and the function of the perpendicular end

Re: What type of buckle?

I see some sub-annular cast copper alloy, double loop buckles very similar to yours listed that date to 1650-1720. You recon it is that old?

Yes, at the extreme, can you please elaborate? Is there a book you can recommend. I can't find anything similar online, and if you are correct, it would make it my oldest find. Thanks
