What to wear in cold water

Hi all,
I am looking for what you would wear in the cold water up to your neck at the beach. My budget for now is about 250.00. My hunts would be the beaches all over Brooklyn, Long Island, New Jersey, and Upstate New York lakes.

I have neoprene waders for now that are very warm but I am thinking about getting a wet/ dry suit to get out a little further. What do you use?

I am also interested in knowing what you wear on your hands and feet if you use a wet/ dry suit.

Thanks in advance for your help.

If you wear a wet suit or even a dry suit, they don't come with gloves attached. I've used good wet suit gloves in the cold water. A dry suit is idea except for the price and I could never get used to the rubber seal around my neck.

I just picked up an " Ocean Tec superstretch" wet suit from Ron Jon's surf shop. It's full length, no feet or gloves. It only cost $80.00
You may want to check the surf shops as well as the dive shops for the best prices.

I picked up off of EBay a mint condition, not a single snag , set of Oceaniac farmer john style wetsuit with a seperate long sleeve shortie giving me 5mm on torso when both are worn for $ 35 shipped to my home.

Thanks for the tips, I think I found what I need it's a Mares 5/4/3mm Trilastic Superstretch Jumpsuit. It's a full size wetsuit for 109.00. Supposed to be made for being able to move around freely. I will just need something for my feet and hands, oh and a big treasure chest for all the goodies I am going to find ;D Thanks again HH, Glenn
I can't do the dry suit thing for the same reasons you mentioned Sandman.

Just a suggestion on the boots: "Scuba Pro Everflex" they ca be a bit costly, but they'll keep your feet warm.

Just a FYI I checked with some DEC. People in my neck of the woods WNY and they said you might get hooked up without the right paperwork. For instance they said you might be required to have a under water salvage permit for certain lakes and that certain lakes MDing or even removal of debri could be a big No No. Some lakes are considered historical areas and treasure hunting them could land you in jail and be a felony. SO be sure you know what your getting into before you set foot in the water. The officer told me that he knows that people are doing it but if your caught in this state they even use that property siezure law against you, like take your home and cars etc.... :P

Thanks for that info MD Dog, I will be sure to look into the regs on that.

Gold-digger, thanks for the boot recommendation, there sure are a ton of different one out there.

Treasuredigger I thought I rememberd this guy saying something about there being some kinda major vs minor permit process so I just looked at the DEC. site to see what kinda permitting you would need and this is what I found.http://www.dec.ny.gov/permits/6554.html
Unfortunately if you are doing more than 50 linear ft a day it would qualify as a major permit process which requires public hearings to get approval. :-\ Course that's just my scared little butt opinion of what I'm reading. I suppose you could do what allot of other guys are doing and just do it until caught and claim ignorance. :P

Sheesh the more I look into this the more I find we all are on borrowed time here in NY. according to what I'm finding in order for us to dig anything older than fifty years old in water or on land private or not we would need permits from
1.) Department of Environemental Conservation
2.) New York State Museum
3.) Department of Education
4.)New York State Historical Preservation Office.

You probably also need a note from your parents too ;D
Checked out the DEC link you provided in the other post, that should keep my lawyer busy for a while.
Glad I have some non-state private lakes and property to hunt for a while, thanks for the info.
P.S. Do you icefish by you in WNY any ice yet?
HH Glenn

I haven't had the time to Ice fish since I was a teen. And for the last three winters it hasn't gotten cold enough for long enough for Ice fishing on even the shallowest of lakes round here. Although I do see the occassional fool who attempts to go out of desperation but I'm just as likely as not to here of his rescue on the evening news. Ice depth has been far short of requirements due to shorter cold snaps. Last year we only saw below zero temps 6 times vs ten years ago we saw 45 days straight at or near 10-20 below 0
So far this year we've had a bout ten days below 35 degrees, can you believe it ? :o

I realize the whole regulation thing above is overboard and your not likely to have any problems but it seems to me that in this state at least the Archies have set it up pretty good for themselves, the over riding laws are actually hidden within the states education laws. And as they are written they are really open for interpretation by everyone from the cops on up. In other words piss some one off by digging a hole anywhere they don't like and your likely to find some silver bracelets on your own wrists. I know the motto for most cops is when in doubt hook em up and let the courts sort it out.
