I went out today to a sight that shout be prime for lots of old coins. Its a 1700's sidewalk area that is under construction, it's like a time capsul there just for me. But the problem I was having is that I have never seen soil so bad. I couldn't pinpiont anything, every wave of my coil was giving me 10 hits give or take no matter how high I put my DISC. :-[

When I'd dig and put my pinpiont probe in the hole it would beep all over in the hole and I found that the rocks were setting it and my detector off. I was very frustreated I pushed on and played with my settings untill I couldn't take the heat any longer.

All & all I got a bunch of junk metal and no coins. If some one would have sugestions I'm listening because I know there is good suff to be found here I have about 2 weeks untill the wourk is done and than it will all be under pavement.

Further info to aid anyone in helping me: I use a whites classic IDX in good working order and yes I checked trust me on this one. I'm located on PA.

Thank all of you that view & HH

I've been in almost that same situation. The rocks were small gravel size and everywhere. I was using an older Coinmaster Classic III at the time and switching to black sand did not help, turning up the disc did not help, turning down the sens did not help. Any combination of those did not help. How did I solve the problem? I left. But the area I was in was not nearly as old as the one you're working. I'd have been lucky to find any silver from the 1950's. So it was easy to walk away from. Sounds like you have quite a dilemma.
Use the smallest coil you have. If you don't have a small coil buy one if you can. If the rocks that are giving you trouble are fill and not "native" to the area you could try scraping the rock layer away. I don't know how much damage the city or county or whoever is redoing the sidewalks will put up with. If the rocks are what the natural ground is made of there is really nothing I can think of to help you out. Maybe dynomite, then screen the rubble. Good luck.

Thank you for the reply but all of the rock looks native to the area and threw all oF the dirt from the serfice down to 12 inchs that I was digging trying to find something there was times I found pieces of scrap metal but the rocks are just horrable and everywere.
The thought was crossing my mind just to give it up on this spot but like I said I pusshed on untill I couldn't take the heat any longer.

I hope I can get a few ideas to try out and go give it at the very least 1 more honest try over the next couple days.

Thanks again & HH everyone!

Uh...you should be turning your sensitivity down instead of up! Unfortunately sometimes you have to remove the shallow junk to be able to get at the goodies. Then again, any one of those"junk" targets could be gold of some type! Just stay with it as long as you can or until the spot is paved and I'm betting something good will come your way, JIM

Yeah I was turning my sensativity down and trying with my DISC. (discrimanation) up and in all combinations. In an attempt to cancel enough out to start pinpionting something and get some trash out of the way but the rocks seem to be most of the problem.
I wander if a detector with a "hot rock" setting on it would help. I'm not to keen on this hot rock thing cause I don't have it but I think these rocks is what I would call hot rocks.

Thanks and HH
Ryan
